Visits: 584 Hi, Last friday we installed incipient on our san switches, from what I know, it decouples the OS from the san and lets you move data around without making os changes - I'm not a SAN expert, so I won't pretend to know the details. We have two paths to the arrays (two switches). They

10, 2008 12:04 PM by dconvery VCB Snapshot crashed SQL server on write error during log flush GUEST jdoz_bw Sep 9, 2008 12:38 PM This is interesting. Today at 3:05 PM EST from my VCB ProxyHost I ran a vcbMounter.exe -t fullvm to copy a VM over the SAN. At the same time the SQL database on the VM guest crashed with the following events from http://www.sqlservercentral.com/Forums/Topic457638-146-1.aspx the event log: MSSQLSERVER 17053: LogWriter: Operating system error 1784 (The supplied user buffer is not valid for the requested operation encountered)MSSQLSERVER 900: The log for database 'BESMgmt' is not availableMSSQLSERVER 9001: The log for database 'tempdb' is not available What is happening here? I thought a Snapshot quiesces a VM's disk on the SAN and is not supposed to have https://communities.vmware.com/thread/167651?tstart=0 an effect on the VM guest itself... Any thoughts or ideas are appreciated. 5922Views Tags: none (add) This content has been marked as final. Show 23 replies 1. Re: VCB Snapshot crashed SQL server on GUEST dconvery Sep 9, 2008 3:26 PM (in response to jdoz_bw) If you are running ESX 3.5U2 Go to add/remove programs select VMware Tools and make sure the VSS driver is added. It is NOT installed during an upgrade and MAY not install during a new install. If you are using anything previous to 3.5U2, you need to re-run the VMware Tools installer and select "Complete" instead of typical. This will install the drivers to quiesce I/O.Dave Like Show 0 Likes (0) Actions 2. Run hardware diagnostics to figure out what's going wrong. It should be able to restart on its own because tempdb gets recreated, but you do need to resolve the hardware issue to prevent this from happening again.Tara KizerMicrosoft MVP for Windows Server System - SQL Serverhttp://weblogs.sqlteam.com/tarad/Subscribe to my blog denis_the_thief Aged Yak Warrior Canada 596 Posts Posted-01/19/2011: 13:46:03 quote:Originally posted by tkizerSounds like you ran into a disk problem. During restore restart, an I/O error occurred on checkpoint file 'G:MSSQL.1MSSQLBackupdxsh.CKP' (operating system error 1784(error not found)). The statement is proceeding but cannot be restarted. Ensure that a valid storage location exists for the checkpoint file. IT's a very basic Restore command and i do have not specified it to Restart. Having checked the MS website for 1784 it suggests the following: The supplied user buffer is not valid for the requested operation Can anyone tell me what is wrong here and why it is creating a checkpoint file or even what it is and how to overcome the error message.
