blog which talked about the failure of Create Database Command. Let see in this blog post

how we can solve the error 3201.While working on the reproduction of the issue, I changed the parameters and later realized that the backup database command

was also failing. If you rely on the default values for folders that don’t exist, this will raise an error message as shown below. Here is the simple command which I have run: BACKUP DATABASE MASTER TO DISK = 'master.bak' The command was failing with below error. Here is the text of the message cannot open backup device operating system error 32 shown in image: Msg 3201, Level 16, State 1, Line 1Cannot open backup device ‘E:\InvalidPath\master.bak'. Operating system error 3(The system cannot find the path specified.). Msg 3013, Level 16, State 1, Line 1BACKUP DATABASE is terminating abnormally. If you notice the error message is pretty clear. The backup is going to path “E:\InvalidPath” which is an invalid folder on my system. Important point to note here is that I have NOT given any file path in the command, I have just given file name master.bak.The question is, from where the path is picked? If you have read my previous blog, it’s picked from “BackupDirectory” value in registry location HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL12.SQL2014\MSSQLServerThe highlighted portion might change based on SQL Version and Instance ID. For me it’s MSSQL12 because this is SQL Server 2014 instance. And my instance name is SQL2014:SQL VersionFolder NameSQL Server 2008MSSQL10SQL Server 2008 R2MSSQL10_50SQL Server 2012MSSQL11SQL Server 2014MSSQL12For example, if you have SQL Server 2012 defaul

An exception occurred while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch.(Microsoft.SqlServer.ConnectionInfo) Cannot open backup device 'C:\Clients\SQLitis\jMKZ.bak'. Operating system error 5(Access is denied.). RESTORE HEADERONLY is terminating abnormally. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 3201) No idea where to even start troubleshooting this. I'm on an administrator account and have full privileges so there shouldn't be anything to deny me doing this but I'm still getting the error message. sql-server backup restore database-restore share|improve this question edited Apr 18 '12 at operating system error 18:01 marc_s 454k938701032 asked Apr 18 '12 at 17:19 user1238565 1242411 3 @casperOne, how can that other question be a duplicate of this one when they don't even have the same error message? –Kyralessa Sep 30 '14 at 18:39 add a comment| 2 Answers 2 active oldest votes up vote 19 down vote accepted Sounds like the service account that SQL Server runs under does not have permission to folder C:\Clients\SQLitis. When SQL Server was installed, it hopefully was set up to use a domain user account (the "service account") that is NOT an administrator on the machine. As such, the SQL Server installer only grants permissions to the folders the SQL Server setup creates. share|improve this answer answered Apr 18 '12 at 17:34 HardCode 4,32622047 Yeah, that's the problem. Thanks. –user1238565 Apr 18 '12 at 18:12 I had to grand permissions to Service Account on Folder as well as the file. Many Thanks! –George Norberg Jan 8 '15 at 9:24 Great! To allow service account to access the file i right clicked the folder, on properties/security i added "everyone". AFter that i could restore. –user193655 Apr 10 '15 at 18:52 For everyone having issues with LOG SHIPPING and already gave permissions to the folder to the SQL Server Agent User in order to allow it to copy the backup files to the locat
