went to Drive D and created Backup Folder there.Additional Story:If you read the first line of the blog post you will read there that I mentioned that I had frustrating experience. It was not frustrating that I do not know the solution - it was totally different reason. When I encountered the above error I quickly went and created the folder in my machine. Once I

created the folder, I still keep on getting the error. After a while I realize what I was doing. I was creating the folder in the machine where I had installed SQL Server Management Studio. To resolve this error one has to create the folder in the machine where SQL Server is installed. Once I created the folder to the location where I was attempting to take backup the issue was resolved. How many of you have been in the same situation as me as mentioned in additional story?Reference : Pinal Dave (http://blog.sqlauthority.com) Tags: SQL Backup and Restore, SQL Error Messages, SQL Server Management Studio4Related Articles SQL SERVER - Error Fix: Msg 13601 Working with JSON Structure June 29, 2016Pinal Dave SQL SERVER - Transaction Log Full - Transaction Log Larger than Data File - Notes from the Field #001 November 7, 2013Pinal Dave SQL SERVER - Case Sensitive Database and Database User - Fix: Error: 15151 - Cannot find the user , because it does not exist or you do not have permission. Earlier this week I wrote a blog operating system error 3(the system cannot find the path specified.). sql server which talked about the failure of Create Database Command. Let see in this

blog post how we can solve the error 3201.While working on the reproduction of the issue, I changed the parameters operating system error 3(failed to retrieve text for this error. reason 15105) and later realized that the backup database command was also failing. If you rely on the default values for folders that don’t exist, this will raise an error message as shown below. http://blog.sqlauthority.com/2011/12/17/sql-server-fix-error-msg-3201-level-16-cannot-open-backup-device-operating-system-error-3-the-system-cannot-find-the-path-specified/ Here is the simple command which I have run: BACKUP DATABASE MASTER TO DISK = 'master.bak' The command was failing with below error. Here is the text of the message shown in image: Msg 3201, Level 16, State 1, Line 1Cannot open backup device ‘E:\InvalidPath\master.bak'. Operating system error 3(The system cannot find the path specified.). Msg 3013, Level 16, State 1, Line 1BACKUP DATABASE is http://blog.sqlauthority.com/2015/01/30/sql-server-fix-error-msg-3201-level-16-state-1-line-1-cannot-open-backup-device-operating-system-error-3the-system-cannot-find-the-path-specified/ terminating abnormally. If you notice the error message is pretty clear. The backup is going to path “E:\InvalidPath” which is an invalid folder on my system. Important point to note here is that I have NOT given any file path in the command, I have just given file name master.bak.The question is, from where the path is picked? If you have read my previous blog, it’s picked from “BackupDirectory” value in registry location HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL12.SQL2014\MSSQLServerThe highlighted portion might change based on SQL Version and Instance ID. For me it’s MSSQL12 because this is SQL Server 2014 instance. And my instance name is SQL2014:SQL VersionFolder NameSQL Server 2008MSSQL10SQL Server 2008 R2MSSQL10_50SQL Server 2012MSSQL11SQL Server 2014MSSQL12For example, if you have SQL Server 2012 default instance, it would be MSSQL11.MSSQLServer.Here is the registry valueWe can change it via SQL Server Management Studio too. You can right click on server node and go to properties. Then choose “Database Settings” tab.If you want to use T-SQL then here is the script. EXEC xp_instance_regwrite N'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE', N'Software\Microsoft\MSSQLServer\MSSQLServer', N'BackupDirectory', REG_SZ, N'E:\InvalidPath' GO NOTE: Once you have changed the value, SQL Service restart is needed so that SQL can pick-up changed

What user is the program running as? Does the bak file exist? Can you access it manually? –Pekka 웃 Oct 18 '10 at 14:41 1 Should we assume this is for SQL Server from the file path, since you didn't put the product in the tags or title? –Powerlord Oct 18 '10 at 14:42 I was able to run this query before I reformatted my laptop if it does any help. This is SQL Server 2008 and I am running as an administrator. The bak file does not exist since I am on the process of creating it with this query. –Smiley Oct 18 '10 at 14:45 @Smiley Face: You have to read the SQL file through your local, not network. So it means you will have to move the SQL file from the network to your local drive first, and restore it. –mrjimoy_05 Apr 8 '13 at 8:13 add a comment| 13 Answers 13 active oldest votes up vote 136 down vote accepted Yeah I just scored this one. Look in Windows Services. Start > Administration > Services Find the Service in the list called: SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) look for the "Log On As" column (need to add it if it doesn't exist in the list).
