random ramblings and rantings of frazzled SQL Server DBA Understanding Third Party Backups and SQLVDI If you use a external or third party backup tool like NetBackup, BackupExec, or one of the many other tools available for backing http://sqlblog.com/blogs/jonathan_kehayias/archive/2009/06/09/understanding-third-party-backups-and-sqlvdi.aspx up SQL Server databases without having to write your own backup scripts, you have no doubt http://dynamic-datacenter.be/?p=505 encountered problems along the way with VDI Errors in your Error Log similar to the following: BackupVirtualDeviceFile::RequestDurableMedia: Flush failure on backup device 'RVX-{58702BA0-C160-4125-952E-CC21954404B7}'. Operating system error 995(The I/O operation has been aborted because of either a thread exit or an application request.) A lot of people get confused by these errors and post questions on the forums and generally the problem isn't a SQL operating system Server problem. Recently the SQL Tips and Tricks blog posted two blog posts that dig into SQLVDI and how it works: http://blogs.msdn.com/sqlserverfaq/archive/2009/04/28/informational-shedding-light-on-vss-vdi-backups-in-sql-server.aspx and one for how to troubleshoot problems with SQLVDI backups: http://blogs.msdn.com/sqlserverfaq/archive/2009/04/28/is-sqlvdi-dll-functioning-properly.aspx If you've ever wondered how this works or what the messages you see regarding backups to Virtual Devices mean in your Error Logs, these posts are a great primer on the subject. All the third party tools I know of (LiteSpeed, SQL Backup, SQL Safe) use VDI, all of them are subject to the mighty 995. There is a newer one on the market HyperBac that is implemented as a driver and bypasses the VDI. If you are on a 32 bit system it is almost always fragmentation of the Mem To Leave(MTL) Virtual Address Space(VAS). VDI will request a buffer space to be created and if it can't get a contiguous memory block you get the magic 995. Almost all third party tools will retry with smaller block sizes these days but that doesn't mean the backup will succeed. Ultimately the fix is a restart of SQL Server and setting the -g option to something larger like 384 on SQL 2000 or 512 on 2005. Keep in mind though if there isn't enough memory in the lower 2GB you can set -g to whatever you want, it attempts to allocate the memory but if it can't it will just fall back until it can and ignore your -g override. Also, if you are using the CLR in 2005/2008 on a 32 bit box you will hit this more often due to the CLR running in the same space. You will get an error with the CLR telling you to enable AWE, which won't fix the problem, and restart the instance, which
→ CommVault - Sudden increase of completion time for SQL backups Posted on June 30, 2014 by Ruben Renders Recently we noticed a sudden increase in the completion time for two SQL related backups on two different servers. Other SQL servers were not experiencing the same issue. It caught our eye the affected systems were used for the same application. The first one is used for acceptation and test and contains approximately 450GB of data. Initially the backupjob completed after 4 hours, now it needed 10 hours to process and it still failed on 8 databases. The second one is used for production and contains approximately 1500GB of data. Initially the backupjob needed 15 hours, now it needed 27 hours and it still throws 11 failed database backups. Environment description: Both SQL instances were running on dedicated Microsoft Windows clusters(non-shared); There is no sudden increase of data capacity on the machines; Cluster has not been failed over; No configuration changes have been performed to the SQL server, nor to the front-end application (indexation, clean-up tasks, batches, etc); No patches were installed on Windows, SQL and CommVault; Everything is still on 1GBit network-wise; We are backing up to a shared Virtual Tape Library (VTL). Currently we are running on CommVault Simpana 9 with Service Pack 14 installed. Our hunch: it needs to be related to a rescheduling of an application-wise task putting extra load on the server. However we are unable to prove it, further investigation is required. Both servers failed with the "error code: [30:325] - Description: Error encountered during Backup. Error []". When investigating the local event log of the Windows system, we notice a bunch of errors stating: "BackupVirtualDeviceFile::RequestDurableMedia: Flush failure on backup device ‘dd9aec90-2c37-4156-abf4-50e95753124a_3′. Operating system error 995(The I/O operation has been aborted because of either a thread exit or an application request.)" Eventually we changed the value VDI value on the SQL Server Instance within the CommVault console. By default this is configured on 300 seconds (5 minutes). We altered it to 7200 seconds (2 hours), the number of retries remained default. After altering the VDI timeout value, the backup runs again as it should, completing within the approved time range and with no failed databases. Hope this helps! /dev/Ruben This entry was posted in CommVault Simpana, SQL iDataAgent and tagged Co
