Thursday, September 21, 2006 4:21 PM Reply | Quote Moderator 0 Sign in to vote Hi, thanks for the answer. I tried starting the SQL service, but when I try to get it started, it gives me an error message at the end. Any ideas? How can I connect via sqlcmd/sqlwb? Thursday, September 21, 2006 7:57 PM Reply | Quote 0 Sign in to vote Have an look in the eventlog to see what errors are raised when you try and start sql server Thursday, September 21, 2006 9:49 PM Reply | Quote 0 Sign in to vote As Simon said, the event log might give some clues. Also, try taking a look at the sql log - typically found under C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\LOG\ERRORLOG (default instance). sqlcmd and sqlwb are client tools/utilities. They're only good if the service is started. Friday, September 22, 2006 5:56 AM Reply | Quote Moderator 0 Sign

01:43:58 I have a number of SQL servers running in a large corporate environment, and Im being informed by our SQL DBAs that they are receiving the following error on multiple servers in the environment within the SQL log file on each http://answers.flyppdevportal.com/MVC/Post/Thread/9f9c4ffe-cccc-4c50-af37-ce5b967b7f78?category=sqlkjmanageability server and I am trying to determine what is causing this error to be generated, if http://www.dlldownloadcenter.com/1717_error.html in fact it is an issue with the OS logs or a configuration issue between SQL & the OS logs. Error: The current event was not reported to the Windows Events log. Operating system error = 1717(error not found). You may need to clear the Windows Events log if it is full The Windows OS logs logs are configured to overwrite the oldest entries operating system as needed (the OS log files are set with a max size of about 10Meg) so I dont believe its a Windows OS log being full issue, but instead either a permissioning issue between SQL & the OS logs or some other vague issue.. The OS on the servers in question is Windows 2008 SP2 (x64), Windows 2003 SP2 (x86) & Windows 2003 SP2 (x64) Version of SQL in use is SQL 2005 (obviously x86 & x64 where applicable). operating system error RepliesSean Gallardy on Fri, 08 Feb 2013 13:23:48 Hello, Genrally speaking SQL Server should have the correct permissions after the install to talk to the windows error log - AFAIK only permissions need set to write to the security log if using the audit tools. The first item I would check is the actual size of the windows error log. If it's at 10 MB then I would try clearing it once (or save it off before you clear it based on your policies) and see if the message goes away. If it does, there is your culprit. -SeanSaurabh Sinha DBA on Thu, 14 Feb 2013 14:57:01 Hi Go to Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Event Viewer and clear logs .
