I read about this process over the net and I tried different methods but it keeps returning the same error.First, I copied the files ".mdf" and ".ldf" from the old folder E:\Data operating system error to the new folder E:\MSSQL\Data. And i make sure that these files are NOT flagged as Read Only.Second, I tried manually to do the following actions:- Right click and detach the database. - Then, I attached the database by seclecting the ".mdf" from the new folder. The Database is Read Only!So I tried to run the following script to make the database as Read-Write, but it didn't work! USE master;GOALTER DATABASE MY_DB SET SINGLE_USER WITH ROLLBACK IMMEDIATE;GOALTER DATABASE MY_DB SET READ_WRITE;GOALTER DATABASE MY_DB SET MULTI_USER;GOIt returned the following error messages:Msg 5120, Level 16, State 101, Line 1Unable to open the physical file "E:\MSSQL\Data\MY_DB.mdf". Operating system error 5: "5(failed to retrieve text for this error. Reason: 15105)".Msg 5120, Level 16, State 101, Line 1Unable to open the physical file "E:\MSSQL\Data\MY_DB_log.LDF". Operating system error 5: "5(failed to retrieve text for this error. Reason: 15105)".Msg 945, Level 14, State 2, Line 1Database 'MY_DB' cannot be opened due to inaccessible files or insufficient memory or disk space. These files below are in the directory but the problem is that when I run the query, it gives me this error: Msg 5120, Level 16, State 101, Line 1 Unable to open the physical file "C:\Murach\SQL Server 2008\Databases\AP.mdf". Operating system error 5: "5(Access is denied.)". CREATE DATABASE AP ON PRIMARY (FILENAME = 'C:\Murach\SQL Server 2008\Databases\AP.mdf') LOG ON (FILENAME = 'C:\Murach\SQL Server 2008\Databases\AP_log.ldf') FOR ATTACH GO In the book the author says it should work, but it is not working in my case. I searched but I do not know exactly what the problem is, so I posted this question. sql sql-server share|improve this question edited Feb 22 at 21:25 MAbraham1 78431530 asked Aug 17 '13 at 8:30 dijai jijfs 322146 If the backup file exists already, please make sure it does not have the "read only" attribute, in addition to making sure that the service has the write permission. –tubelius Jun 20 at 11:09 add a comment| 10 Answers 10 active oldest votes up vote 50 down vote accepted SQL Server database engine service account must have permissions to read/write in the new folder. Check out this To fix, I did the following: Added the Administrators Group to the file security permissions with full control for the Data file (S:) and the Log File (T:). Attached the database and it works fine. share|improve this answer edited Apr 11 '14 at 7:00 user3414693 answered Aug 17 '13 at 8:37 Rahul Tripathi 101k1595173 4 Sometimes SQL server will run under a different user group other than Administrators Group –JDandChips Jun 2 '14 at 9:52 12 Also, it may help to start S
