restart the server that has been running for a day or two. Our SQL Server Agent uses a none expiring domain credential. I understand that this problem only happens when the profile being used by the SQL Servr Agent has changed (password change). What puzzles me is that the login is A ok error 1069 the service did not start and no changes has been made to it's password. We always resolve this problem by changing the login used in the SQL Server Agent to local and after that, returning it back to it's original domain login. Unfortunately, we cant always do this everytime something goes wrong. Can anyone please help us shed a light on this? We're using SQL2k with SP3a. Thanks! I found a work around for it to connect to SQL server. Go to Run-->services.msc--> MSSQLSERVER . On the "log on as" tab right click and check your login information. i suggest delete the password and retype it again.

The ironic thing is, there is no password. Steps are: Right click on the Service in the Services mmc Click Properties Click on the Log On tab The password fields will appear to have entries in them... Blank out both Password fields Click "OK" This should re-grant access to the service and it should start up again. Weird? NOTE: if the problem comes back after a few hours or days, then you probably have a group policy which is overriding your settings and it's coming and taking the right away again. share|improve this answer edited Mar 20 '15 at 11:39 answered Dec 13 '13 at 15:12 JLo 1,38011021 3 This answer worked for me. an instance. The services did not start automatically after the server was rebooted. When they tried starting the services manually, the following error message was thrown. The error message is usually associated with a http://www.sqldbadiaries.com/2010/12/22/the-sql-server-service-did-not-start-due-to-a-logon-failure/ wrong password for the Startup Account. But as far as I knew no Change Controls were implemented on this instance and the password of this account was never changed. Quickly looked up in Active Directory Users and Computers to http://www.sqlserverf1.com/tag/error-1069-the-service-did-not-start-due-to-a-logon-failure/ check if this account was locked out. No, it was not locked out. Since it is not new to hear "someone" or "something changed" stories on the servers, I decided to re-enter the password in the SQL Server sql server service properties. After punching in the password, the following message popped up. Strange! The same account was used to start the SQL Server service for a very long time, now it got the Log On As a Service right? Something must be wrong. On this server SQL Server and SQL Server Agent have different startup accounts. Before re-entering the password for the SQL Server Agent service, I decided to check the settings of Log on as a Service sql server error in Local Security Settings on the server. I could see the SQL Server service's startup account listed here (since I punched in the password again) but the one for SQL Server Agent service was missing! This made it clear why the services were failing with logon failure error. The Service Accounts did not have Log on as a Service rights! For any service to start, it should have this right. How did this got changed? A quick look in the Change Management application revealed that a series of Windows Security hot fixes were applied some time back. One of these hot fixes would have wiped out the permissions for the SQL Server startup accounts. Since the root cause has been figured out, I happily entered the password for the SQL Server Agent service. Same informational message that it has been granted the rights. The services started and Pradeep closed the lid of the laptop to catch some sleep. It is very critical to bring the SQL Server online immediately as it impacts applications leading to escalations. First, we need to understand on where to check if SQL Server fails to start. - Try to start SQL Server from Configuration manager on standalone servers and on cluster servers, bring the SQL Server resources ONLINE. - Check if the SQL Serve errorlog is created. You can find the location of the SQL Server errorlog file from Start -> All Programs -> Microsoft SQL Server 2008 or latest version installed -> Configuration Tools -> SQL Server Configuration Manager -> Select SQL Server Services on the left side -> On the right side right click on SQL Server (MSSQLSEVER or instance name) and select Properties -> Click on Advanced Tab(in SQL 2012 or higher there will be separate tab called startup parameters) -> you can see the location of SQL Server ErrorLog file as mentioned next to the "-e" startup parameter . - Check and see if new errorlog file is getting created when you start the SQL Service, if it is not getting created then check the Event viewer Application and System logs which should have some errors related to the cause of the failure. - If Errorlog file is created, then look into the file and look for any errors. Although there could be variety of reasons for the failure, here we try to document most common ones and add more to the list going forward. Error 1069: The service did not start due to a logon failure. - This error occurs if the SQL Server service account password in incorrect. Change the password to the correct one from SQL Server configuration manager and then restart the SQL Server service.
