Hi, I'm runningSQL 2005 ENT x64 on a Windows 2003 x64 SP2 16 GB RAM machine and is encounting the below error message while attempting to copy https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2199576 data. The data copy is the only process running on the server as the environment is currently off-line for maintenance. I've research the web and can't find any suggestions to point me in the right direction. Any help is appreciated - thanks. Rerun your statement when there are fewer active users. Ask the database administrator to check the lock and memory configuration for this instance, or to check for long-running transactions. So for 500M lock structures on 64bit system you need to have ~61Gb of RAM not even counting all overhead. By default SQL Server tries to escalate locks to the higher level (table or partition when enabled) automatically after ~5,000 locks acquired on the object. Although escalation would fail in case if there are any other locks on the table from the different session (SQL Server would try escalate locks again every

The following error ocurrs about 4-10 times per dayDESCRIPTION: Error: 1204, Severity: 19, State: 1The SQL Server cannot obtain a LOCK resource at this time. Rerun your statement when there are fewer active users or ask the system administrator to check the SQL Server lock and memory configuration.I'm having trouble putting my finger on trace flag 1204 it. I've done a couple of things:1) More than once, I've create a trace file on my local machine, monitoring the events on the old server:Lock:deadlock, Lock: deadlock chain, Lock: Timeout, and SQL:BatchCompleted. The trace file created by those events really didn't tell me anything meaningful. I never get a full deadlock type transaction. It seems to always fix itself -- I just continue to get the e-mails that there was a problem. The trace showed me the sql statements, but there wasn't anything unusual about it that I could recognize. The statements were quite varied -- so I couldn't nail down a specific application or statement causing the problem. The other thought I had was that my equiment is simply too old and over-run. Don't laugh-- it's Dual 450 processor with 2GB RAM. It was running W2k, upgraded from NT 4.0. It's really a secondary box so it's not used too much. The most active application on it is Epolicy Orchestrator (Mcaffee). 2) So, this weekend, I formatted the serverand installed W-2003. I reinstalled SQL, restored Master DB and got it all the databases back up. It's
Re-run your command when there are fewer active users, or contact a user with System Administrator (SA) role to reconfigure SQL Server with more LOCKS. Explanation This error occurs when Adaptive Server runs out of locks. Beginning with Adaptive Server Enterprise version 12.5.2, 1204 errors are written to the error log with additional information, including the client IP address, user name and SQL text. The number of locks available is controlled by the Adaptive Server configuration parameter number of locks. Following is an example of the output from sp_configure, and a brief description of the output related to locks: 1> sp_configure "number of locks" 2> go Parameter Name Default Memory Used Config Value Run Value --------------------- ----------- ----------- ------------ ----------- number of locks 5000 0 5000 5000 The Default column contains the default value for number of locks, 5000. The Memory Used column indicates the amount of memory used by the configured locks. Each lock requires 120 bytes of memory. The Config Value column contains the value to which the number of locks configuration parameter has been set with sp_configure. If the value has not been explicitly configured, there is a 0 (zero) in this column and the default value is used. The Run Value column contains the value Adaptive Server is using. Action Rerun the command when there are fewer active users, or ask the Sybase System Administrator (“sa”) to reconfigure Adaptive Server for more locks. Increasing the number of available locks impacts performance and memory requirements. WARNING! Before making any changes to Adaptive Server, refer to the chapter “Memory Use and Performance” in the Performance and Tuning: Basics and the chapter “Configuring Memory” in the System Administration Guide: Volume 2 for information about how Adaptive Server uses memory resources. To increase the number of locks available, complete these steps: Determine the number of locks currently configured for Adaptive Server: 1> use master 2> go 1> sp_configure "number of locks" 2> go WARNING! If you increase the number of locks available by too many locks, Adaptive Server may run out of memory and be unable to restart. If you run out of memory and cannot restart Adaptive Server, see the section “Adaptive Server does not start after altering configuration” in the most recent version of Troublesho
