I don't want to do a restore, should I just wait until the hardware problems are fixed? Then what? Anyone experience anything like this? So you have a known hardware problem that hasn't been fixed yet??? The error message you got, the 1823 "A database snapshot cannot be created because it failed to start.", is what is preventing CHECKDB from running. I would first fix the hardware problem and then if you get this error when you try to run DBCC CHECK
cannot perform any I/O (Input/output) operation. Sometimes, the error occurs due to either conflicts of Windows API used by SQL Server or SQL Server database corruption. It creates such a situation where user http://www.rapidprogramming.com/tutorial/HOW-TO-FIX-ERROR-823-IN-MICROSOFT-SQL-SERVER-81 is unable to use the database. This unavoidable state led to a terrible http://www.sqlservercentral.com/Forums/Topic694506-5-1.aspx aftereffect of data loss. To have this lost data back user is advised to use SQL database recovery solutions. For instance, user can also run across an error message similar to the following one in Windows Application Event Log or Microsoft SQL Server ERRORLOG: “2010-03-06 22:41:19.55 spid58 Error: 823, Severity: 24, State: 2. sql server 2010-03-06 22:41:19.55 spid58 The operating system returned error 38(Reached the end of the file.) to SQL Server during a read at offset 0x000000a72c0000 in file ‘C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL10.SQL2008MSSQLDATAmy_db.mdf’. Additional messages in the SQL Server error log and system event log may provide more detail. This is a severe system-level error condition that threatens database integrity and must be corrected immediately. Complete a full database fatal error 823 consistency check (DBCC CHECKDB). This error can be caused by many factors; for more information, see SQL Server Books Online.” Whenever, in any program, the above stated error message is encountered, in the ongoing process of modifying or querying the data, error is automatically returned to that program and SQL Server database connection is closed. Causes of the problem: This problem is caused by Windows APIs, which is used by Microsoft SQL Server. These APIs (such as Write File, Read File, WriteFileGather, and ReadFileScatter) perform Input/output operations. After the completion of I/O operations, MS SQL Server examines for associated errors with API calls. When API calls betrays with OS error, user notices this behavior of SQL Server. Here is the possibility that this problem may also occur due to corruption in the Microsoft SQL Server database. Solution: Follow the following steps to recover SQL server database from corruption: Examine doubtful pages table. Observe database consistency. Investigate Windows Application Event Log to find operating system and file system related errors. Restore database from current backup. Users are directed to go for advanced third-party applications, in the case of data recovery failure by using the above

I had another instance running on the same box so i stopped the service for that instance and copied the master.mdf and masterlog.ldf over to the corrupt instance and the service with the corrupt master db then starts. I'll test out the other scenario now and get back shortly."I have other instance in WinXP. I'm not working now, but monday i'll try this. Post #694506 Mohit K. GuptaMohit K.
