There is an unterminated String somewhere. String literals must be enclosed by single (') or double (") quotes. JavaScript makes no distinction between single-quoted strings and double-quoted strings. Escape sequences work in strings created with either single or double quotes. To fix this error, check if: you have opening and closing quotes (single or double) for your string literal, you https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/JavaScript/Reference/Errors/Unterminated_string_literal have escaped your string literal correctly, your string literal works correctly over multiple lines, if any. Examples Multiple lines You can't split a string across multiple lines like this in JavaScript: var longString = "This is a very long string which needs to wrap across multiple lines because otherwise my code is unreadable."; // SyntaxError: unterminated string literal Instead, use the + operator, a backslash, or template literals. The + operator variant looks like this: var longString = "This is a very long string which needs " + "to wrap across multiple lines because " + "otherwise my code is unreadable."; Or you can use the backslash character ("\") at the end of each line to indicate that the string will continue on the next line. Make sure there is no space or any other character after the backslash (except for a line break), or as an indent; otherwise it will not work. That form looks like this: var longString = "This is a very long string which needs \ to wrap across multiple lines because \ otherwise my code is unreadable."; Another possibility is to use template literals, which are supported in ECMAScript 2015 en

But the only way to find what syntax error line the error is on is to start commenting out the section of code I just wrote and reload it into the browser to narrow down where my missing ');' is. How do you "compile" a JavaScript source to make sure it is syntactically correct so that I can debug it in the browser? javascript share|improve this question asked Jan 22 '10 at 19:57 Robert 6,388164870 closed as too broad by Tiny Giant, Drew, Tushar, Alex, Kevin Brown Dec 22 '15 at 14:20 java script error There are either too many possible answers, or good answers would be too long for this format. Curly braces without an if, for, while, etc. Code that is never run because of a return, throw, continue, or break. Case statements in a switch that do not have a break statement. Leading and trailing decimal points on a number. A leading zero that turns a number into octal (base 8). Comments within comments. Ambiguity whether two adjacent lines are part of the same statement. It happens randomly with between 1 to 4 popups at once, though I can cause it to happen manually by reloading Facebook or gmail (interestingly, this behavior doesn't happen with Google reader or Google plus). I'd like to do two things here. Firstly, have some way of actually telling what's causing this rather than try reloading tabs at random. Secondly, stop this from happening, either by fixing the issue or by suppressing these messages. So how do I track down and eliminate this issue?
