Word 2003. In the formula dialog box.... =IF(D11>.5,0,D11) This works fine, BUT.... is not what I need. I need to be able to display a text message if the IF statement is true. The following gives me the !Syntax Error, " =IF(D11<.5,"MessageText","") I have searched high and low and in between, numpages word 2013 tried the formula using the F9 option directly in the table and the one above is

Please help. Thanks, TD ANSWER: Your field construction is inside-out here, and I'm not sure why the initial version of it is working at all. You want the IF field to be the primary field. The syntax of http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/msoffice_word-mso_windows8/syntax-error-in-word-field/4ca70f64-31d9-44a3-a95f-a7dddcf7c635 IF fields is: { IF Expression1 Operator Expression2 TrueText FalseText } Note that there are no commas separating the arguments. You do need a formula field to reference the table cell. So what you want is this: { IF { =D11 } > .5 "Message Text" } or { IF { =D11 } < .5 "Message Text" } depending on whether > or < is intended (you've used both in the examples above). Since you apparently don't need http://en.allexperts.com/q/Microsoft-Word-1058/2012/2/syntax-error.htm any action or message if the statement is false, you can omit the FalseText argument. The easiest way to create this field is by hand, using Ctrl+F9 to insert the pairs of field delimiters. Don't try to do it with Table | Formula. ---------- FOLLOW-UP ---------- QUESTION: I have tried variations of the formula above yesterday and today, and could not get that to work either. The only one that actually does not give any error is the one that is not supposed to work at all! I just entered the formula above (using CTL F9) and I now get the following error.... Error! Unknown op code for conditional. AnswerThe field code I provided works for me. Are you sure you're entering it correctly? Is it in a table cell (otherwise the table cell reference won't work)? I assume that D11 is the correct cell reference for a cell in the same table. You must insert the pairs of braces (both of them) using Ctrl+F9. You must do this directly in the table cell, not in the Formula dialog. It could also be that spacing is an issue; see http://www.aspose.com/community/forums/thread/255271.aspx.
