Target is to use the Papyrus tool line 1: syntax error: unexpected "(" to visualise some UML diagrams. However I do not get that far... after obtaining the code from http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/packages/eclipse-modeling-t ools-includes-incubating-components/heliossr1 untar and unzipping it towards /opt/eclipse after installing openjdk-6-java and adding a link in the /opt/eclipse/eclipse.init (-vm /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk/bin/java ) I get the strange error /eclipse: 5: Syntax error: "(" unexpected when running ./eclipse in the /opt/eclipse/ I looked around quite a while to understand what this meant, followed the guidelines on http://wiki.eclipse.org/Eclipse.ini, redid the whole process 2 times... but did not manage to see anything else than /eclipse: 5: Syntax error: "(" unexpected any ideas on what is happening ? The script is linked in that article but convenience you can find it here also. Now when run this http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/45781/shell-script-fails-syntax-error-unexpected script install and sets up the environment without error but you have to enter your sudo password more than once due to sudo's time-out value by default. So I started experimenting by removing all the sudo lines and running the whole script via sudo at the command line like so: kemra102@ubuntuvm:~$ sudo ./pi_dev_env_install.sh This works fine as expected and gets most of the way through until this point: ./pi_dev_env_install: 68: ./pi_dev_env_install.sh: Syntax error: "(" unexpected Now this line worked fine previously when not running the whole script with sudo. Due to Ubuntu's DashAsBinSh affinity I suspect your script is interpreted by dash instead of bash.
