In this case, for example, in the offending line, the # is clearly highlighted as a comment (light grey), not a string literal (maroon). The sad thing about this is that SO's syntax highlighter is actually pretty stupid, but is still intelligent enough

Ruby 1.9.3 support has been dropped, as it reached its end-of-life almost two years ago (and as a result it doesn't receive security patches any longer).
