Too Many Failed Attempts" Ok, I get this error when printing a PDF from Document Viewer (Evince). It works fine if I print all pages but, if I only print certain pages, I get this error. I can eventually get it to print by retrying. It may take 1 or 100 retries but it will go eventually. I'm printing to an HP Laserjet 4000 with a Jet Direct Card via TCP/IP. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Now, since an update of CUPS I get the "Too many failed attempts" message. Any way of reversing the update and getting back the use of my printer? error There is a known bug in GTK used by Ubuntu Intrepid's 8.10 desktop environment Gnome that causes trouble when printing from a GTK application, such as evince or gedit. The applications do not print and an error occurs: Too many failed attempts. OpenOffice against it, and even the test page tool in cups administration won't show that behavior.Check your error log:tail -f /var/log/cups/error_logE [26/Jan/2009:10:45:13 +0100] Print-Job: UnauthorizedThe message "Print-Job: Unauthorized" indicates the problem. Here is how to fix it:1. Stop the cups daemon to prevent cups from reseting your modificationssudo /etc/init.d/cups stop2. Edit your cups configuration with the editor of your choice https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1111571 and comment out these linessudo vi /etc/cups/printers.conf#AuthInfoRequired username, passwordEDIT:To prevent cups to place thoose lines again in your config file you may want to make it immutable withsudo chattr +i /etc/cups/printers.conf3. Start cups againsudo /etc/init.d/cups start4. Try to print with gedit - it should work now.Did it work for you? Drop a comment... I tried this fix, but the printers.conf file reset itself http://brainextender.blogspot.com/2009/01/ubuntu-intrepid-too-many-failed.html and over-wrote my changes. I cannot print again??Thanks, Jason February 12, 2009 at 7:53 AM Anonymous said... Thanks, worked perfectly. February 14, 2009 at 9:50 AM Admins Day said... @JsunnDid you stopped the cups service before changing the settings?! That does the trick - at least for me. February 18, 2009 at 7:04 AM astjohn said... This worked for me only once. Any time after that and printers.conf reset itself as Jsunn mentions February 21, 2009 at 10:57 AM Admins Day said... @astjohn:Hmm - strange. I'd the effect only when i did not stop the cups service while changing the "printers.conf".You may want to set the file attribute "immutable" with the "chattr" command to leave changes as they are? February 25, 2009 at 1:13 AM Philip said... This workaround will work for just one time only when printing on Samba printer. File is always reset after printing. Nope, 'chattr' doesn't work either - the file remains unchanged, but I get the error "Too many failed attempts" attempting to print. I have to bounce CUPS every time. Tedious. Access is denied for 3 minutes. After that time, the user is able to log in again with the correct password. This login attempts orginate from Thunderbird. I have 4 calendars plus my contacts synced. The username and passwords work after i waited long enough. The question is why sometimes TB uses another (wrong) password? Maybe the problem is the password manager TB uses? Contacts are synced every hour, calendars every 30mins. Can anyone help? They probably have a better insight into their product and know how to debug something like this. From OC side you could check your logfiles (see FAQ forums). It could be also useful if you have a look at the product sending out this emails.
