Very early in the installation process, I get a MikTex setup wizard error saying: "Windows API Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified Details: C:...\somefile.tpm" The file that results in the error seems to be different every time I try. I have tried many different installation paths, with many different setup options. The same error occurs if I download the ~138MB "Basic MiKTeX 2.9" Installer or if I use the Net Installer to download the entire setup (~1GB). For example I captured the setup attempt using LICEcap: According to this question, however, no problems are to be expected (8.1 is essentially a service pack of Windows 8). Does anyone know how to work around this and get it to install? I had no problems installing from the exact same setup (from the proTeXt DVD) on a fully patched Windows 7 (x64). I tried both the DVD ProTeXt-3.1.5-031815.iso and ProTeXt-3.1.5-033015.iso. Do you have some virus protection enabled? –Ulrike Fischer Jul 10 '15 at 11:15 @UlrikeFischer: this is a standard installation of Windows, but I disabled Defender, so there should not be anything interfering. –0xC0000022L Jul 10 '15 at 11:38 Where did you get this version of MikTeX 2.9. Does that help? –doncherry Apr 8 '13 at 19:08 Thank you, it finally worked. Apparantly for some strange reason my program files not only contain a MiKTeX 2.9 folder but also a MiKTeX 2.9_2 and a MiKTeX 2.9_3 folder, and I also needed to change the security settings for the last two of them to make the update succeed. –Wouter Apr 8 '13 at 20:47 @Wouter Glad it works; we’ll close this question as a duplicate then, just to keep things tidy.
