I improved the title a little to make it more descriptive. This will help people with the same issue to find it. I hope you don't mind. –Martin Scharrer♦ Apr 13 '12 at 17:38 2 This seems to be an issue with your MikTeX installation rather with PGF/TikZ. Make sure that the output PDF is not already open, e.g. from an earlier compilation run. The Access is denied might be caused by that. Did you tried to reboot and try it again? Under Windows this is always good advice. –Martin Scharrer♦ Apr 13 '12 at 17:41 2 After looking at docs.miktex.org/manual/initexmf.html, I think this might be because of Windows restrictions. Try to run MikTeX package manager and update the DB, at best using admin rights. Alternative try the initexmf --admin --update-fndb in the console as mentioned in t

I'm using the "Basic" MiKTeX install (via basic-miktex-2.9.4407.exe) and I have not manually altered the distribution in any way. This is a completely out-of-the-box install. Whenever I try to update MiKTeX via http://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/51319/new-to-miktex-errors-when-updating-and-compiling the "Update" program, I get the following error: The operation could not be completed for the following reason: Windows API error 5: Access is denied. Details: C:\ When I try to install a package that I don't currently have, I get the following error: pdflatex.EXE: Windows API error 5: Access is denied. Basically, whenever I try to do anything in MiKTeX I get some flavor of the Windows API error 5: Access is denied. error. Further searching/Googling of the internet and document hasn't yielded any specific results or potential fixes. I'm new to Windows (and MiKTeX, for that matter), so I'm kind of puzzled on what's going on and how to fix it. miktex windows share|improve this question asked Apr 9 '12 at 20:05 user2473 1,48821226 closed as too localized by Stefan Kottwitz♦ Apr 10 '12 at 7:14 This question is unlikely to help any future visitors; it is only relevant to a small geographic area, a specific moment in time, or an extraordinarily narrow situation that is not generally applicable to the worldwide audience of the internet.
