Share 13 March 2016 A Western Digital hard drive provides extra storage space for important files, documents, photos, and other media to free up space on a computer's hard drive. These hard drives provide write protection, which does not allow the user to add new files to the drive or make changes. In order to start using a WD hard drive without write protection, the user needs to remove it. In order to do this, it is important to understand what write protection is, determine the cause, and choose a method that restores the disk's functionality. Understanding Write Protection Although write protection can seem like a bothersome issue when trying to save new files and data to an external hard drive, it is actually a very useful security feature. Write protection is a mechanism that prevents any modification or deletion of important data on the device. So, while it can seem like an inconvenient feature when trying to save new documents, it protects users from accidentally copying over important files they do not wish to lose. What Causes Write Protection Errors If the user does not add write protection to a WD hard drive, then it is likely that it occurred as an error. One possible reason is due to a virus, which can fill the hard drive with junk files that can lead to write protection errors. Additionally, write protection errors can occur if the hard drive is full. If a single file has write protection, then it can affect other files on the drive as well. Users can remedy these issues before attempting to remove write protection from the entire drive. Removing Write Protection There are a few different methods for removing write protection, and the right method for any given user depends on the type of computer the hard drive is connected to as well as the cause of the write protection error. Before starting, connect the WD external hard drive to the computer. Try disabling diskpart and repairing disk permissions before diving in deeper to adjust the registry. Disable Diskpart If using a Windows computer, connect the WD hard drive and take note of its name in Windows Explorer. Work in the command-line utility in
