Memory Card Is Write Protected How To Remove Protection
message comes up. Is there a way to fix this without having to take it into the shop? *feeling horribly tech-illiterate* EDIT: Apparently I can't spell, either. EDIT #2: Thank you, okay for Mods to lock if necessary. EDIT #3: Doh! It's actually an Olympus digital camera... my old one was a Sony, and I got confused. I've tried everything, and all functions work fine except for that damn "Write Protect!". Any more how to remove write protection suggestions? EDIT #4: Formatted, it works perfectly again. Thank you, ATOT! #1 imported_Tomato, Mar 1, 2004 TuxDave Lifer Joined: Oct 8, 2002 Messages: 10,577 Likes Received: 1 Were you able to take pictures before? I'm just gueesing, but that's the case with Memory Sticks. #6 Ornery, Mar 1, 2004 imported_Tomato Diamond Member Joined: Sep 11, 2002 Messages: 7,614 Likes Received: 0 I'll check the MemoryStick when I go home. Both SD Memory Card and xD-Picture Card can have their write protection switch on the side of the memory card. It will be a small slide that opens a notch not a switch like you might think If yours does not have a slider try putting the memory card in your reader on your conputer and open Windows Explorer. Go to the drive that is that memory card. Check to see if a file on there that is marked as "read only"? If so, in Windows Explorer, you can change the attribute back to read/write. This triggers the write protection. Put the card back to the computer, move all the images into the computer and cancel any option you have made. Although it is sure that it will work if not save all the images and format the card IN the camera. prevent the memory card from being erased or wiped. Not all types of memory cards will feature these; SD and Memory Sticks often include the write protect switch. Step 1: Check the Switch SD Cards have a physical switch on the side http://www.steves-digicams.com/knowledge-center/how-tos/photo-accessories/fixing-the-memory-card-write-protected-error.html of them which sets the write protection of the card. If the write protect switch is in the locked position, then it will not be possible to write to the card. It will, however, be possible to http://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/14464236 read the photographs from the card if they are already there. Mini and Micro SD cards do not feature a switch, however, when they are placed in the SD card adaptor to fit into your computer, there write protect is a lock switch. Some people mistakenly believe that this is to lock the card in position, however, this is actually a write protect switch. When using the adapter, you shouldn't touch the switch. Step 2: Repair the Switch Sometimes the switch can break off the memory card, which will leave the card in a locked position. This will mean that you won't be able to unlock the card because there's no switch. If how to remove this is the case, then it's fairly easy torepair the switch. The switch itself does not do anything inside the card; it is simply a piece of plastic which hits a switch inside the camera or reader. This means that it works in exactly the same way as the switch on an old 3.5" floppy disk, or the tabs on a VHS tape. Repair the switch by simply sticking a piece of tape over the correct section of the switch. Once this is fixed in place, the switch will be depressed correctly. This will mean that the switch is no longer write protected and it will be possible to write photos to it once again. Step 3: Remove Protection It's also possible to protect individual files on your camera's memory card by selecting an option in your camera's menus. This protection will need to be removed before the individual files can be removed or adjusted. If you're not sure how to do this, look through the instruction manual of your computer. Step 4: Format Card If you are having problems removing the memory cards write protection, but have already adjusted the physical switch, then another option is to format the card. Put the card in your computer and format it to Fat-16 or Fat-32, depending on your camera. Step5: Dealing

Aug 1, 2005 After using my E-1 since new when they first came out w/o any hiccups at all.... I experienced a strange and critical problem yesterday.I was out shooting an assignment with a Lexar 2GB WA professional CF card in the camera that I've used for more than a year. Photos had previously been taken and were stored on the card from a few days earlier (this is just for "background). The card / camera were functioning normally and I had shot and reviewed photos for about half an hour when........I went to shoot a frame and it wouldn't focus lock and beep.... when I looked down the LCD had a "WRITE PROTECT" error message on the screen. When I pushed the photo review button I got a "NO PICTURE" message!I cycled the camera on and off several times. Put the lens on and off, etc. just to exercise every connection I could think of. No joy. When I got home and put the card in a card reader there was absolutely "nothing" on the card. No files of any type at all. Zero.I put the card back in the camera and formatted it, and it has been working fine since.Have any of you out there experienced this in the past? If so, did it reoccur with the card that caused the problem???I spoke w/ a tech person at Lexar and they said that if the card formatted okay, I should not be afraid to use it and have confidence in it. The person said that sometimes inadvertent files can get written to the card that will cause them to mess up, w/o their being anything wrong with the card. Thanks in advance for any insight / experience that any of you might be able to provide.Scott Reply to thread
