Trying to analyse the trace - converting the event data to xml an error comes up: Msg 9420, Level 16, State 1, Line 28 XML parsing: line 1, character http://dba.stackexchange.com/questions/1406/illegal-xml-character-out-of-the-extended-event 731, illegal xml character Investigating the issue, I find that there is a character of ascii number 3 in the sql_text action value. This value is passed by a client in form of dynamic SQL. This is of little concern here. The problem is that XE cannot handle weird characters in sql_text. This is how I get to the data causing the trouble: declare @data nvarchar(max) declare @id int SET NOCOUNT ON if object_id('tempdb.dbo.#xerrors') is null --drop table #xerrors begin select CAST(null as XML) as xml_event_data, * into #xerrors from sys.fn_xe_file_target_read_file ( '...\Log\error_*.xet', '...\Log\error_*.xem', null, null ) alter table #xerrors add id int identity(1,1) primary key not null end while exists(select 1 from #xerrors where (@id is null or ID > @id) and xml_event_data is null) begin select top 1 @id = id, @data = event_data from #xerrors where (@id is null or ID > @id) and xml_event_data is null order by id print @id update #xerrors set xml_event_data = CONVERT(xml, event_data) where id = @id end select ascii(SUBSTRING(event_data, 731, 1)), event_data from #xerrors where id = 11253 And my session setup is: -- TRIES TO ELIMINATE PREVIOUS SESSIONS if exists(select 1 from sys.dm_xe_sessions xes where xes.name = 'error_capture') DROP EVENT SESSION e

In the last month I got http://www.sitepoint.com/forums/showthread.php?621236-Converting-data-with-special-characters-into-xml 2 hard drive failure, and did have to reinstall SQL server 2008 R2. The 2 first time, no problem everything went smooth. After last hard drive failure, I xml parsing had reinstalled Windows 7 (x64) and SQL server 2008 R2 ... works fine. No problem to connect to the server using Windows authentication. I install SP1 for 2008 r2 and since then I can't anymore connect to the server (on my local machine). Got error message as below. I do notice that the SQL server service xml parsing illegal is stopped. If I restart it, try to connect, it will automatically stop. Any hints on how to get that situation resolved ... Thanks pascal. The problem i am having is that some users are putting things like tabs, &, ? etc in the text they add to the db - giving an 'invalid xml error' in SQL server when try to convert to xml. I have managed to replace some of them, but I'm sure there must be a better way such as encodeing everything in unicode etc? Before I pot any sort of code on here, does anyone know of a quick solution to this problem? cheers monkey monkey - the rest is history Jun 11, 2009,04:12 #2 wwb_99 View Profile View Forum Posts SitePoint Author Join Date May 2003 Location Washington, DC Posts 10,653 Mentioned 4 Post(s) Tagged 0 Thread(s) What are you using to write to
