I am developing an ASP.NET MVC5 application which consist of 1 web application and 1 web https://forums.iis.net/t/next/1230154 api application for handling REST calls. They are on the same solution in Visual Studio. While developing, they run on the localhost with two different ports as usual. Now that I am deploying to a web server, I planned to have them running like this: Web app: http://mydomain.com Web api: http://mydomain.com/api So I created a site on IIS for the web app and virtual directory under that site with an alias of "api". The web application runs without issue and I can put a static test http://stackoverflow.com/questions/24130639/iis7-virtual-directory-gives-403-forbidden-access-denied HTML file under api folder and it runs fine. But when I put all my published file in api folder, I got 403 Forbidden Access Denied. My questions: can I run an ASP.NET application on a Virtual Folder? If so, what I might have done wrong? The folder permissions are the same between ./mydomain.com and ./mydomain.com/api folders. iis-7 virtual-directory share|improve this question asked Jun 9 '14 at 23:30 Pelangi 5419 Do you have directory browser disabled in IIS? If this is the case, and you also do not have the file extension you are using for your published file under your API folder set as a default document under this site directory then you should get a 403 access denied i believe. –Hatter is Mad Jun 11 '14 at 14:59 Thanks for your reply Aaron. The site itself works. Would it be possible Virtual Directory under it has different setting on the directory browser disabled/enabled? Anyway, how do I check it? Cheers. –Pelangi Jun 12 '14 at 4:47 It appears as though i was incorrect. Instead of getting the 403 error you are getting when these settings are BOTH set wrong on your site you would be receiving a 404 error from the server. –Hatter is Mad Jun 12 '14 at 17:59 If i were you i would enable directory browser on the virtual directory. Then see if you can access your API inside of it. –Hatter is Mad Jun 12 '14 at 18:07 Thank
Now I have setup a new website in IIS 7 on a Server 2008 R2 box. Now I am getting a 403 forbidden error when trying to browse to webpage. The permissions on the folder are set correctly. Is it intended to allow anonymous access? Or only allow selected users/groups? 1 Poblano OP Mstewart30 Oct 28, 2013 at 8:14 UTC It is set to allow anonymous access and everyone has 403 forbidden full control. 0 Ghost Chili OP Kelly Armitage Oct 28, 2013 at 8:17 UTC Any "denies" on that folder? They will take precedence over "allows". Have you compared those permissions to any other site you have, that works? Is it a public site I can test? 1 Cayenne OP Jason5373 Oct 28, 2013 at 8:19 UTC You need to setup permissions accordingly in the IIS manager and make sure your "share" (if any) permissions as well as your NTFS permissions are set access is denied corectly. Are the files/folders local or are they on a virtual directory, I.E. Different machine? 2 Datil OP Sean Donnelly Oct 28, 2013 at 8:34 UTC Agree with Kelly on the ownership and permissions on the folder. One other thought might be do you have a default document set on the site, or more specifically do you have the correct default document set? Can you view http://localhost/? 1 Poblano OP Mstewart30 Oct 28, 2013 at 8:37 UTC There aren't any denies. It is an internal site. The permissions are set exactly like one of the others that is working. The files and folders are local. 0 Poblano OP Mstewart30 Oct 28, 2013 at 8:45 UTC I have a default document and tested it. if you copy the index file into the default c:\inetpub\wwwroot, it works, right? for the 403 forbidden, when viewed on http://localhost/to_your_index_file the error message is more, could you paste it in, the more detailed one? 1 Pimiento OP ShabirHakim Oct 29, 2013 at 6:16 UTC Hi there can be lots of reason behind foStart here for a quick overview of the site Help Center Detailed answers to any questions you might have Meta Discuss the workings and policies of this site About Us Learn more about Stack Overflow the company Business Learn more about hiring developers or posting ads with us Server Fault Questions Tags Users Badges Unanswered Ask Question _ Server Fault is a question and answer site for system and network administrators.
