button in iTunes since yesterday in anticipation of the official release of the iPhone 2.0 software. This morning, shortly before 8:00 a.m. PST, iTunes finally changed it tune and stopped telling me that I had the latest version installed. Of course, I immediately told it to begin the installation process…much to my later regret. Even though I don't have an unlocked or jailbroken iPhone, the installation process was NOT smooth. Towards the end of the installation, iTunes attempted to access the iTunes Store, presumably for authentication purposes. However, I'm guessing that too many people are trying to do this at the same time. So, despite months of preparation, Apple cannot "complete [my] iTunes Store request." And, http://forums.macrumors.com/threads/itunes-an-unknown-error-occurred-9838.517010/ instead of an upgraded iPhone, I now have a iPhone that can only be used to make emergency calls. An unknown error occurred (-9836).There was an error in the iTunes Store. Please try again later. So, if you are eager to get the latest iPhone 2.0 upgrade, I would suggest waiting for a few hours until Apple has resolved this issue. Else, you'll be toting around a brick that can only be used for emergency calls-which isn't a bad http://www.hiwhy.com/2008/07/11/iphone-20-unknown-error-occurred-9838/ thing if you're trying to avoid phone calls on a Friday. Update: Now, I'm seeing this error message: We could not complete your iTunes Store request. An unknown error occurred (-4). There was an error in the iTunes Store. Please try again later. 10:13 AM: There's no magic trick or solution. You have to keep trying. I headed off to work and plugged in the iPhone and it authenticated. So, I no longer have an iBrick. While the iTunes autosync'd all my contacts, photos and videos, I have not been able to move over the new Apps that I downloaded yesterday. I'm still seeing that -4 error. strong>10:28 AM: In iTunes, I right-clicked on the iPhone and selected Sync and it brought my apps over. If you are using a one button mouse, that's control-click. Apple support told me 3 hours ago that my phone would connect automatically in about 30 minutes. This just show's Apple is not ready for the Enterprise. They knew this relase was coming and decided they would not increase the infrastructure to support the user base. This is not the first time Apple servers have been overloaded. Upgrade at will. With people across the country slamming the iTunes servers, new iPhone users and upgrading users are commonly seeing the following error: "We could not complete your iTunes Store request. An unknown error occurred (-9838)" Alternatively you may receive this error as well: "iPhone activations are unavailable at this time" Sadly, this may render your phone unusable! Calls to Apple support suggests that this a problem with their servers. This is similar to Apple's activation problems during the first rollout. Just do not upgrade or activate your phone at this time. The iPhone must reconnect to activate initially or to reactivate after the software upgrade. For those who are currently getting the 9838 error. Keep trying. Once you get punched through the server, your activation should complete. Closing any application that may be in the activation/upgrade chain may help as well. Therefore, if you are trying to activate/upgrade, have all applications closed except iTunes. iTunes for the first time. Error code 9838 is being returned as users try to activate their new iPhones. This system error is caused not by any fault of the iPhone, but rather with the iTunes servers themselves. Error 9838 is being caused by the very popularity of the new phone. The Cause of Error Code 9838 When the iTunes servers are overloaded with people trying to activate their phones, users will receive error code 9838 along with the following text error message: We could not complete your iTunes Store request. An unknown error occurred (-9838). Looking up error code 9838 at Apple's website won't help; there is essentially nothing you can do from your end. This is an Apple infrastructure issue. Users of the new 3G iPhone have fallen victim to their own need to have the latest and greatest gadget on its first day of release. How to Avoid Error Code 9838 The simple answer to avoiding error code 9838 is to wait. People who try to activate their phones after the initial rush will likely not experience error code 9838 since traffic to the sign-up servers will taper off over time relieving the problem. Stores selling the 3G iPhone initially tried to activate each phone directly in the store. Error code 9838 and failed attempts to connect with iTunes 7.7, however, put an end to that during the mid-morning hours. Instead, customers who purchase the 3G iPhone are being asked to activate the phones themselves from home in order to avoid receiving the error code 9838. Of course, those who rush home and quickly try to activate their new 3G iPhone will experience error code 9838 anyway since the problem will recur until the volume of new activations slows down. Unfortunately, the type of customer most motivated to buy the 3G iPhone on the first day of its release are the ones most eager to activate the device. Error code 9838 and the need to wait to activate their new 3G iPhones has left many of them frustrated. Apple is hoping that their frustration doesn't result in returning the 3G iPhone to the store.
