then press "Enter". Windows XP: Go to "Start" > "Run". In the Open: line type "CHKDSK /F" and press "Enter". Note: If the folder you are trying to delete is located on a drive that is not your C: drive, add the drive letter to the end of the command. Example: CHKDSK /F E: If you used a drive letter in the command above, you will get a prompt about dismounting the cannot delete empty folder in sharepoint 2010 drive. Type "Y" for Yes and press "Enter". Most likely, you will get a message like the following: Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N) Type "Y" for Yes and press "Enter" on your keyboard. Nothing will happen just yet. You'll have to restart your computer, to let the scan run. Once the scan is completed, try to delete the folder. You should be able to delete it just fine because CHKDSK has fixed the errors preventing it. Close whatever program is holding them open, probably your browser, and try again. Let me guess, your trying to delete your %TMP% folder. EDIT: To answer zipi's question. It will delete every file and folder that it can. So, if c:\tmp\dir2\dir3\open.txt is open, c:\tmp\emptyDir is an empty directory, and you do this: c:\>dir c:\tmp /b /s c:\tmp\a.txt c:\tmp\dir2\b.txt c:\tmp\dir2\dir3\open.txt c:\>rd /q /s c:\tmp c:\>dir /s /b c:\tmp c:\tmp\dir2\dir3\open.txt You will have deleted: c:\tmp\a.txt c:\tmp\dir2\b.txt And removed: c:\tmp\emptyDir But still have the directories... c:\tmp c:\tmp\dir2 c:\tmp\dir2\dir3 ...an the file: c:\tmp\dir2\dir3\open.txt If instead, a.txt was open, you'd only have: c:\tmp\ and c:\tmp\a.txt share|improve this answer edited Sep 24 '12 at 14:01 answered Sep 24 '12 at 12:43 James K 2,5562922 yes I think that this is the problem.but if these error appear it means that the folder don't delete?or only the message appear and the folder deleting well? –zipi Sep 24 '12 at 13:17 @zipi - It will delete and remove everything it can, and leave only those files (and the folders in their path) undeleted and unremoved. I've added to the answer if you need a visual for this. –James K Sep 24 '12 at 14:04 Hi JAMES!THE PROBLEM REPRODUCE ALSO IF THERE ARE NO FOLDERS THAT OPEN ..DO YOU KNOW WHY??? –zipi Oct 21 '12 at 7:07 @zipi - It could be that you're current directory is in one of the directories you are trying to remove. –James K Oct 2
