I am a bookseller, and am interested in selling audio books. I know there are techniques for polishing the surfaces of these scratched disks, but I am wondering about software to check read errors. Since I am really only interested in media errors, I think I only need to see level 1 error rates. But the only tool I have been able to find to do this is Plextools Professional from Plextor for $47 downloaded. Error checking (scanning) is not so much a question of software but more a question of hardware. Only some drives have the capability of reporting C1/C2 errors in a meaningful way, and most of those drives can do this by using Nero CD-DVD Speed (freeware) to perform a Disc Quality scan.
