However if I add the Toolkit to an existing ASP.Net 2.0 appliction web project I cannot create web services in a http://stackoverflow.com/questions/888794/web-service-error-could-not-create-type-when-calling-service-from-ajax single asmx file. If I create a web service VS always creates a code behind file as well. In VS 2005 I just needed to right click on the web service and select "View Markup". I just changed the markup to use the correct namespace: Line 1: <%@ WebService Language="C#" CodeBehind="List.asmx.cs" Class="List" %> I Just removed the project name from the namespace to match the namespace used by List.asmx and this error went away. I've created a C# webservice on my local machine that runs fine. Now I'm trying to deploy it to a webserver. The server is Windows 2003 with IIS 6. I created a new virtual directory in IIS, set it to be an application, and gave it "scripts only" could not create execute permissions. I've manually copied all the files from my local webservice directoy to the virtual directory on the server. When I try to access the page, I get the dreaded "Could not create type 'Service'" message. Here is some additional interesting information: 1. I'm new to VS 2005 / .NET 2.0, and still kind of new to webservices in general. I've noticed that when I build the webservice on my local machine, it doesn't create a .dll for my service like webservices I created with VS 2003. Instead the App_Code directory sits in the virtual directory containing my code file, and apparently the website is dynamically compiling it. There is no 'Bin' directory (well, technically there is because I added a reference to a class library, and it's dll sits there, but there's nothing compiled from my project there). Is this copacetic? I read up on the "publish web site" feature that is supposed to generate an already-compiled dll, but when I tried it it didn't work either. 2. My local machine is running IIS 5. On the settings for the local virtual directory, I've noticed that the web service is set to use integrated windows authentication (might have set that myself manually, don't remember). By default it's not o
deploying a web service? OK, so you wrote a web service and you may even have tested it and everything worked fine. So the you did some "cleanup" and tried to deploy the web service. It compiles and deploys just fine, but when you try to invoke and hit the service you are presented with the following error: Server Error in '/' Application.Parser ErrorDescription: An error occurred during the parsing of a resource required to service this request. Please review the following specific parse error details and modify your source file appropriately.Parser Error Message: Could not create type 'WebServices.Candidates'.Source Error:Line 1: <%@ WebService Language="C#" CodeBehind="Candidates.asmx.cs" Class="WebServices.Candidates" %>Source File: /Candidates.asmx Line: 1So just how do you solve this problem? Here's my checklist of things to check when having trouble deploying web services: Check that IIS is using ASP.NET 2.0. Begin by starting up the Internet Information Services manager. Expand "Web Sites". Expand your web site e.g. "Default Web Site". Locate the Virtual Directory to which the web service was deployed and right click it. On the popup menu, click "Properties". On the Properties window, select the "ASP.NET" tab. Ensure that the APS.NET Version is set to 2.0.x and not 1.1.x. If it is set to 1.1.x, set it to 2.0.x and retry your web service. Ensure your Visual Studio build properties are set correctly. Locate the .asmx file in your Solution Explorer pane and right click it. On the popup menu, click "Properties". Ensure that the Build Action is set to "Content". Locate the code behind (.cs or .vb) file in the Solution Explorer and right click it. On the popup menu, click "Properties". Ensure the Build Action is set to "Compile". If either of these weren't set correctly, make the correction, recompile, redeploy and retest. Ensure ASP.NET 2.0 is an Allowed web services extension.
