Not sure if this is where i should post this, but I have always got the most responses in the Switcher Hangout, and I am still new at things so I http://www.mac-forums.com/showthread.php?t=234314 thought here would be best. I formatted my Seagate Freeagent External 1Tb drive to Mac OS something (journaled) yesterday evening and everything that was on it is from my Dell Laptop is now gone, and it said there were approximately 996gb of 999 available. Then I plugged it into my airport base station. Started my Time Machine found the Airport Extreme under the Shared tab, found the 'Untitled' drive and selected it as the drive to use for TM. Started the original wireless back up last night about midnight and it finished the following day around noon. I have 200.06gb used on my Mac HD, according to Finder. After the original back up via TM was done the next one was due at 2pm ish today this error popped up. "Time Machine Error The backup disk image “/Volumes/Untitled-1/Taylor’s iMac.sparsebundle” could not be accessed (error -1). Latest successful backup: 4/2/11 at 1:34 PM" I have screen shots uploaded to assist the gurus of the forums. Now as I access the external drive via finder all that is on it is 2 sparsebundles. One is Name-Taylor’s iMac 1.sparsebundle Kind-Sparse Disk Image Bundle Size-181.4GB on disk it says, Other is Name-Taylor’s iMac.sparsebundle Kind-Sparse Disk Image Bundle Size-126.47GB on disk. I should mention that I

Things that have helped in some circumstances: •Be sure no other users or Macs have it mounted. If so, have them select it on the desktop or Finder sidebar, and eject it manually. (That sometimes happens if could not it's still being indexed after a prior backup, or the backups were being viewed via the "Star Wars" display). •Disconnect all users (per item C12), then go to Time Machine Preferences and re-select your Time Capsule or network location as the backup destination. •Restart your Mac. •If could not be you've changed the network volume's password, see item C14. •It's possible some names (of all things!) may be a problem. See item C9. •The backups may be corrupted. Try repairing them, per item A5. •If you have WD SmartWare installed on Lion 10.7.x or later, it may not be compatible, and there are reports it can cause this problem as well.  See if there's a newer version; if not, use Western Digital's uninstaller, or delete the app from /Applications and the files com.wdc.WDDMservice.plist and com.wdc.WDSmartWareServer.plist from /Library/LaunchDaemons.  There may also be a file in Library/Application Support. •One user reports having very little space on the startup drive (4 GB), and freeing more helped (a general rule is, try to keep at least 10% free on your startup volume).   11/15/12 Copyright © 2012 James Pond. All rights reserved.

That way it at least gives me a single place to look. Maybe it will help others too. Much of the specifcs, especially the hdiutil command line and the ifconfig trick, I sourced from this thread in the ReadyNAS forums. Note that the advice is by no means specific to ReadyNAS drives (I have a Thecus NAS myself). Many thanks to btaroli in that thread for the insight. Time Machine Time Machine is Apple's easy-to-use backup system, baked into OS X (as of Leopard). Unfortunately it doesn't allow you to back-up to a networked drive out of the box. Enabling this ability is pretty easy. Early on there were some reliability issues - which were largely due to the fact that Time Machine created a disk image (more specifically, a sparse bundle) on the network drive, and this was prone to corruption if the network connection was disrupted during a backup. I don't know if all the issues here have been entirely resolved now, but it does seem more reliable. Apple's own Time Capsule, which has been specifically designed to work with Time Machine, uses this same method, so it is no longer an entirely unsupported technique. Enabling Time Machine for network drives So how do you enable backing up to network drives? Open a terminal window and paste the following in (then hit return, of course): defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUns
