When it fails, I get the message:Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to "Tom's Time Capsule".The backup disk image "/Volumes/Data/TomsMac.sparsebundle" could not be created (error 60)I sometimes get the same message, but with "error 17"I also get the following error message popup (even though the disk is the one in my Time Capsule):The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer. The popup offers three choices: Initialize, Ignore, Eject. My local Apple Store Genius concluded that the problem must be with the Time Capsule, so I bought a new one. That didn't fix the problem.Time Machine Buddy messages:Starting manual backupAttempting to mount network destination URL: afp://Tom%20McAuliffe@Toms-Time-Capsule.local/DataMounted network destination at mount point: /Volumes/Data using URL: afp://Tom%20McAuliffe@Toms-Time-Capsule.local/DataCreating disk image /Volumes/Data/TomsMac.sparsebundleError 60 creating backup disk imageFailed to create disk image /Volumes/Data/TomsMac.sparsebundle, status: 60Backup failed with error: 20Failed to eject volume /Volumes/Data (FSVolumeRefNum: -108; status: -47; dissenting pid: 0)I did Repair Disk Permissions and Verify Disk and everything's OK.I erased the Time Capsule using AirPort Utility and did a hard reset on the Time Capsule.I did a re-install of Mountain Lion and that didn't fix anything. My MacBook Pro is accessing the Time Capsule wirelessly, as it always has.Help! It is supposed to be backing up to Time Capsule but not http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/57187/time-machine-error-backup-disk-image-could-not-be-created sure if it's ever worked. It's actually not mine but if there was something quick to check, I'd appreciate it. thx time-machine time-capsule share|improve this question asked Jul 23 '12 at 18:18 timpone 260314 add a comment| 2 Answers 2 active oldest votes up vote 0 down vote accepted Try to setup Time Machine from scratch: Turn TM off Turn it back on. Select a disk (the Time Capsule should show up ok). You should get a message that TM is starting in 2 minutes.. If that has problems, can you post here again.. edit 1 was an issue with computer name needing to be set (see in comments) share|improve this answer edited Jul 30 '12 at 19:39 timpone 260314 answered Jul 23 '12 at 19:39 David DelMonte 1,67272136 Thx for answer. We did this and got the countdown. When it went to backup, we got the same error. We put in the correct password for Time Capsule. Just at a loss because it is not really clear what next should be such as determining whether a Time Capsule issue or config of Time Machi

The first http://pondini.org/TM/C17.html time machine setup worked fine and I got to backup my Mac probook just fine. After a month I got error messages saying backup failed. now I try to create a new backup by 1. selecting backup disc NONE and could not then 2 creating new backup -selecting the backup device and time machine tries to "make disc space available" - this is taking about 2 minutes. Then I get an error message: Time machine could not complete the backup. The backup disk image"/Volumes/GoFlexHome Public-1/KM's MacBook Pro.sparsebundle" could not be created (error 45). The error is displayed as error 17 as well. I have no problem accessing the network drive at all thanks Kai Reply With Quote 26th December 2010,08:23 AM #2 could not be snark Join Date Apr 2005 Location Melbonia Posts 2,192 In my experience, backing up using Time Machine to a disk connected to your wireless router works perfectly well - until it doesn't. I had the same thing happen to me when I used a NAS drive. Unless you are using a Time Capsule, you really are better off connecting the disk directly to your machine. Because Time Machine uses a dual-ended checksum protocol, it is only compatible with a directly-connected USB/FW/SATA drive, a networked Time Capsule, or another Mac running OSX 10.5.2 or greater. Even though Apple's own AEBS lets Time Machine save its backup bundle to an AirDisk, it is officially unsupported. Once a Time Machine archive develops a fault, the entire archive is un-usable, and should be deleted and the whole backup started over from scratch. The issue with backing up over a network is that you may not have sufficient privilege to write into the folders on the network drive and/or the .sparsebundle file. Change the Sharing & Permissions for everyone to Read & Write for all folders to where your backups will be
Frequently Asked Questions Home Troubleshooting Contact Next There doesn't seem to be a single cause for this message, so there doesn't appear to be a single fix, either. Things that have helped in some circumstances: •Be sure no other users or Macs have it mounted. If so, have them select it on the desktop or Finder sidebar, and eject it manually. (That sometimes happens if it's still being indexed after a prior backup, or the backups were being viewed via the "Star Wars" display). •Disconnect all users (per item C12), then go to Time Machine Preferences and re-select your Time Capsule or network location as the backup destination. •Restart your Mac. •If you've changed the network volume's password, see item C14. •It's possible some names (of all things!) may be a problem. See item C9. •The backups may be corrupted. Try repairing them, per item A5. •If you have WD SmartWare installed on Lion 10.7.x or later, it may not be compatible, and there are reports it can cause this problem as well. See if there's a newer version; if not, use Western Digital's uninstaller, or delete the app from /Applications and the files com.wdc.WDDMservice.plist and com.wdc.WDSmartWareServer.plist from /Library/LaunchDaemons. There may also be a file in Library/Application Support. •One user reports having very little space on the startup drive (4 GB), and freeing more helped (a general rule is, try to keep at least 10% free on your startup volume). 11/15/12 Copyright © 2012 James Pond.
