I unhitched everything except the keyboard, tried again. Previously iTunes (7.1.1 already loaded) had gone through the restore cycle before giving me the 1429 message. This time it immediately gave me a "cannot restore - error 1418" message.I disconnected and reconnected the ipod, now iTunes won't recognize it at all and I get a sad iPod icon. Also an ominous slow ticking from the hard drive.
