If you configured RRAS or ISA in your server, Windowsfirewall will disabled automatically. If you want to enable& run Windowsfirewall, you need to stop RRAS or ISA. Please stop all running programs and check again. If this does not help, disable all security softwares that you are using, run msconfig and disable all startup items except Microsoft ones, reboot the server and check again. Recently I had problems with some of the client computers connecting to the server. All clients were being backed up, but some were unable to connect with the WHS console, altho they could connect thru Windows Explorer. https://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/7d6390ea-d798-4761-8b81-1a11a5fc3370/windows-firewallics-could-not-start-error-170-requested-resource-in-use?forum=whssoftware In an attempt to solve this I disabled the Firewall/ICS service to go into Configuration to check on which ports the firewall was using. Afterwards I tried to restart the Firewall/ICS service and got the above error message. Now none of the clients can connect to the server, either thru the server console or Windows Explorer. According to info found on Google I have checked the following Services: Remote Procedure Call, Windows Management Instrumentation, Event Log, & Network Connections, DCOM Server Process Launcer. All are started. Software add-ins are: Avast! anti-virus, Disk Management, Advanced Admin Console, Duplication Info, & Tivo Publisher. Up until now this system has been running good. Any help in solving this problem will be greatly appreciated. PS: I forgot to mention one solution I tried. I disabled the Routing & Remote Access and stopped it. Starting Windows Firewall/ICS failed. I restarted the server and tried again (Routing & Remote Access still disa

I cannot connect from any of my client computers. I have narrowed it down to the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Service (ICS), which won't start; the startup type is set to automatic. When I try to start it manually, I get an error message: "Windows Firewall/ICS could not be started on this computer. Error 170: the requested resource is in use." I can ping the clients from could not start the server, but the clients can't ping the server and get a reply. I spent 3 hours over two days on the phone with Microsoft Tech Support (for $79); they told me the problem was the avast! anti-virus program; In between calls I uninstalled avast!; Microsoft connected to the server by remote control and said there were still remnants of the program causing a problem. I have contacted Alwil (producer of avast!) and they directed me to an uninstall program, which I ran. I have done a search on this problem and found several possible solutions, none of which worked. I have checked to see if certain necessary services were started; they were. I then did a winsock reset; that didn't work either. At one point the server was doing backups, but the client computers still couldn't connect to the server. Has anybody run into this problem or have an idea how to correct it? How can I find out which resource is in use and what else is using it? I really don't want to have to reinstall the WHS OS. Thanks for any help you can give me.
