Virtual Machine Could Not Initialize Hyper V
all of my Hyper-V hosts. I then went through and pruned out some hyper v could not initialize could not create or access saved state file old test VMs and made sure the ones I had left were still relevant. After I did the upgrade to 2012 event id 3040 could not initialize R2 and powered on some machines that had been dormant for a few months, actually quite a few months (years in some cases), I got some errors when powering some machines on. Update 30-4-2014: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2517374 Added clarification that icacls.exe should be executed in cmd prompt session and not PowerShell. The KB has article Hyper-V virtual machine may not start, and you receive a “‘General access denied error’ (0x80070005)” error message covers the scenario of missing permissions to .vhd files. I saw a similar thing but with the .vsv and .bin files. On a side note you may or may not see the pre-created https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/rmilne/2014/01/15/hyper-v-could-not-initialize-could-not-create-or-access-saved-state-file/ .bin file with newer Hyper-V versions. Back to the issue, what was going on? The symptoms that I observed were that: The VM would import successfully Powering on would result in an error - could not create or access saved state file Error 3080 was logged into the Hyper-V Worker event log An example of the error is shown below: PS C:\> Start-VM Typhoon Start-VM : 'Typhoon' could not initialize. (Virtual machine ID 5BEF5A39-069D-4887-8688-8D80A505A88C) 'Typhoon' could not create or access saved state file E:\Configs\Typhoon\Typhoon\Virtual Machines\5BEF5A39-069D-4887-8688-8D80A505A88C\5BEF5A39-069D-4887-8688-8D80A505A88C.vsv. (Virtual machine ID 5BEF5A39-069D-4887-8688-8D80A505A88C) You do not have permission to perform the operation. Contact your administrator if you believe you should have permission to perform this operation. Service SID Before we dive in and correct the issue one thing worth mentioning is around the underlying Windows feature that Hyper-V uses – per service security identifier (SID). Windows Server 2008 introduced the concept of the service SID to further strengthen windows services and to provide even more granularity when applying perm
An Attempt to initialize VM saved state failed – Could Not Create or Access Saved State File #HyperV #SCVMM August 25, 2014 The Author Hyper-V, Security 0 Hello https://charbelnemnom.com/2014/08/an-attempt-to-initialize-vm-saved-state-failed-could-not-create-or-access-saved-state-file-hyperv-scvmm/ Folks, Well, after a few weeks away from work on vacation, I've http://www.techrid.com/hyper-v/hyper-v-could-not-initialize-on-windows-2008-r2/ finally managed to sit back and go through all my 30 Hyper-V hosts across different remote sites from a single pane of glass, of course you guessed it? yes, yes… Virtual Machine Manager . What I've come across from browsing through the console one Virtual Machine in a particular could not remote site is in a Stopped state. And of course, what is the first thing you want to try to do is to power on that VM! The unexpected behavior, the VM failed to start with the following error : Error (12700) VMM cannot complete the host operation on the hv01.dc.net server because of the error: ‘DC01' could not initialize. (Virtual machine ID 7431245E-0FB3-45D3-B2E2-014124480F42) could not init ‘DC01' could not create or access saved state file D:\VirtualMachines\DC01\Virtual Machines\7431245E-0FB3-45D3-B2E2-014124480F42\7431245E-0FB3-45D3-B2E2-014124480F42.vsv. (Virtual machine ID 7431245E-0FB3-45D3-B2E2-014124480F42) Unknown error (0x8001) Recommended Action Resolve the host issue and then try the operation again. As we can see in the error above that the Virtual Machine could not access the saved state file .vsv. The next logical thing is to remote into the Hyper-V host and try to dive deeper. Again the VM failed to start. As you can see in the above self-explanatory error that you do not have permission to perform this operation, therefore the issue is security permission. Two errors are logged in the Event Viewer as well: Event ID 3040: Event ID 3080: Back to basics, what files are used to create a virtual machine in Hyper-V: .XML files These files contain the virtual machine configuration details. There is one of these for each virtual machine and each checkpoint of a virtual machine. They are always named with the GUID used to internally identify the virtual machine .BIN files This file contains the memory of a virtual machine or checkpoint that is in a saved

Hyper-V "Could not initialize" on windows 2008 r2 Hyper - An error occurred while attempting to start the selected virtual machine (s). ‘VM' could not initialize. Checked the permissions if this could be with Full Control permissions under Task Manager.
