fiddly enough to piece together reliably, and I need it often enough, that I thought I'd blog about it. That way it at least gives me a single place to look. Maybe it will help others too. Much of the specifcs, especially the hdiutil command line and the ifconfig trick, I sourced from this thread in the ReadyNAS forums. Note that the advice is by no means specific to ReadyNAS drives (I have a Thecus NAS myself). Many thanks to btaroli in that thread for the insight. Time Machine Time Machine is Apple's easy-to-use backup system, baked into OS X (as of Leopard). Unfortunately it doesn't allow you to back-up to a networked drive out of the box. Enabling this ability is pretty easy. Early on there were some reliability issues - which were largely due to the fact that Time Machine created a disk image (more specifically, a sparse bundle) on the network drive, and this was prone to corruption if the network connection was disrupted during a backup. I don't know if all the issues here have been entirely resolved now, but it does seem more reliable. Apple's own Time Capsule, which has been specifically designed to work with Time Machine, uses this same method, so it is no longer an entirely unsupported technique. Enabling Time Machine for network drives So how do you enable backing up to network drives? Open a terminal window and paste the following in (then hit return, of course): defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1 Mounted network drives will then show up in the list of destinations available for storing backups. Getting a working disk image Unfortunately this is not always enough. Often, after doing this, Time Machine will appear to start preparing a backup then fail with a cryptic

I'm a registered mac developer), and the problem is still there. Unfortunately, I never tested it with a clean Lion install to verify if it was working.Permission are properly set (I've verified). The folder "DSHLaptop.tmp.sparsebundle" gets created in the backup folder when the backup https://forum.synology.com/enu/viewtopic.php?t=41281 starts, but then it just quits with error"The backup disk image “/Volumes/Backup/DSHLaptop.sparsebundle” could not be created (error 10).Obviously my hostname is DSHLaptop. No idea what to do.Very not fun.---EDIT - SOLVED I have a Time Capsule which I was using for backups. Needless to say it was unreliable, so that's why I wanted to make the switch over to my 1511+. I had never previously used it on any DSM Version nor OSX release. Anyway, here is how I got things working under OSX Lion version 10.7.2 (11C55) (I'm a registered Mac/IOS Developer), hence the beta release. If you follow the instructions to the letter, I can guarantee it will work. I was previously getting Error 10 constantly.1) I created a new network share on DSM called "Time Capsule" and a new user named "TimeCapsule". 2) Then, I mounted the existing Time Machine (The one I was no longer going to be using). The folder contained two files: a hidden file called ".com.apple.timemachine.supported" (which had no contents... just a blank file), and {your-machine-name}.sparsebundle. 3) Then I mounted the new Synology Time Machine share using the new TimeMachine user credentials, and copied both files over. 4) After that, I just went into Time Machine Preferences, and set the Synology "Time Machine" disk as the destination.Voila! It's working as we speak, and has been for the past 24 hours. OSX Lion 10.7.2 (11C55) and DS

The first time machine setup worked fine and I got to backup my Mac could not probook just fine. After a month I got error messages saying backup failed. now I try to create a new backup by 1. selecting backup disc NONE and then 2 creating new backup -selecting the backup device and time machine tries to "make disc space available" - this is taking about 2 minutes. Then I get an error message: Time machine could not complete the backup. I had the same thing happen to me when I used a NAS drive. Unless you are using a Time Capsule, you really are better off connecting the disk directly to your machine. Because Time Machine uses a dual-ended checksum protocol, it is only compatible with a directly-connected USB/FW/SATA drive, a networked Time Capsule, or another Mac running OSX 10.5.2 or greater. Even though Apple's own AEBS lets Time Machine save its backup bundle to an AirDisk, it is officially unsupported. Once a Time Machine archive develops a fault, the entire archive is un-usable, and
with Time Machine and Mountain Lion (Mavericks Too!) (Oh and ElCapitan!) March 27, 2013March 9, 2016 by Dillie-O, posted in Geekery Note: I just upgraded to OSX Mavericks (10.9) and the ReadyShare drive is still readable and functional in Time Machine. You shouldn't run into any trouble if you decide to upgrade. If you do run into problems (I did later on), I have some notes below to help. Over the weekend I purchased a Netgear DGND3700v2 DSL Modem / Router (N600) and discovered that there was a great feature called ReadyShare. This allowed you to plug a USB drive into it and have it shared across all your computers in the network (music, photos, backup, etc.) However, their documentation to get it to work with OSX's Time Machine backup tool wasn't working. After some digging and tweaking, I managed to make it work. TL;DR (For those of you that want the quick fix); Use Fat32 (might be listed as simply FAT in newer versions of Disk Utility) partitions for all your partitions since the router will be able to read them. From there, create a sparse bundled disc image on the partition for your Time Machine backup. Mount it, and then set that to be your Time Machine backup source. The Setup I'm running a MacBookPro with Mountain Lion (OSX 10.8.3). I have a Netgear DGND3700v2 DSL Modem / Router (N600) with firmware version 1.1.00.12_1.00.12NA and a Western Digital Elements 1.5 TB Drive. Getting things to work for you may vary slightly based on drive/hardware, but I this approach should work. Formatting the Drive The first step is to format the drive. According to the documentation, the router is supposed to be able to support OSX Extented (Journaled) partitions, but I could never get them to show up. According to some various discussion threads, the AFP protocol changed somewhere in Lion and there's still no support since Netgear does some custom interaction with the shares. However, ReadyShare DOES support Fat32 and we can make this work on OSX. The first step is to plug in your USB drive and backup any data you may want to keep on your USB drive. We have to repartition the drive, and you'll lose everything. Next launch the Disk Utility tool, select the USB drive, and click the "Partition" tab. Change the drop down from "Current" to whatever partition scheme you want (I'm using two). Change the drive formats to be "MS-DOS (Fat32)" and verify that they are being created using the "Master Boot Record" scheme (under options). Note, that with El Capitan the option now simply reads MS-DOS (Fat). Major HT to James B and Jon for helping debug this one in the comments. One other
