For example, for the following tnsnames.ora entry, the Database attribute value needs to be my_database: my_database = (DESCRIPTION = (ADDRESS = https://docs.oracle.com/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14219/net12150.htm (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = my_host)(PORT = 1521)) (CONNECT_DATA = (SERVER = DEDICATED) (SERVICE_NAME = my_database) ) ) If you are using the Instant Client without a tnsnames.ora file, the Database attribute value needs to be a SQL connect URL rather than a service name: //host:port/service_name where host is the host name or IP address of the Oracle database server, port is the http://www.easysoft.com/support/kb/kb00951.html Oracle listener port and service_name is the service name. 'TNS aliases' or 'service names' are defined locally to each workstation. Thus different workstations could have a completely different alias to refer to the same database. SolutionCheck what aliases or service names are defined on the workstation and specify that could not resolve value in the ODBC DSN. An invalid or non-existent name will result in this error. The following methods can be used to view existing TNS Service names on your machine: Look in the file 'ORANT\Network\Admin\Tnsnames.ora' (for versions of Oracle prior to 8.1) or 'Oracle\Ora81\ Network\Admin\Tnsnames.ora' (for versions of Oracle from 8.1 onwards). In this file each defined name will normally have ".world" appended to it.For Oracle 8, run "Oracle Net8 Easy Config". This will list the available service names. For Oracle 7, run "SQL Net Easy Configuration". This provides the option to list the available service names. For Oracle 8.1 onwards: Try specifying the full service name, i.e. as it appears in the tnsnames file. User commentsPosted by Ed Giarrusso on 1/19/11 10:18 AMWe had this problem after completing a default on a 2008 x64 server. ODBC connectivity test passed but WinSQL would fail to connect using the same ODBC. To resolve this problem I uninstalled and reinstalled to a folder that did not have the (x86) in the path. When a program needs to connect to an Oracle service via Oracle Networking (SQL*Net), it must look up the connect data for that service somewhere. When the lookup fails, the Oracle client code raises ORA-12154. Most people will encounter this error when their application tries to connect to an Oracle database service, but it can also be raised by one database instance trying to connect to another database service via a database link. Note that this error is generated by the Oracle client code on the local host where the program is running, not by the remote Oracle service to which you are attempting to connect. There are a few ways that the Oracle client code can look up connect data: A flat file named tnsnames.ora Oracle Names service LDAP If you see the whole ORA-12154 error with the text, then your program is finding a working Oracle client install, but that the Oracle service as specified is not listed in tnsnames.ora, Oracle Names or LDAP. The most common causes of ORA-12154 are: The entry is missing from tnsnames.ora The entry in tnsnames.ora is malformed The program is using tnsnames.ora from the wrong ORACLE_HOME The program is not using a fully-qualified service name, but no default domain is enabled in sqlnet.ora Most sites use tnsnames.ora, but enough use Oracle Names and LDAP that the first step should be to determine which name resolution method is deployed at your site. If you are not the database administrator, you should get in touch with the people who manage your Oracle systems and find out which method you should be using. Often they will be able to provide guidance for resolving your problem in accordance w
