Depending on the configuration of the web server, it may not be the IUSR account that needs the access. I find it's best to fire up FileMon, filter it to the name of my database (with wildcards), and check out the properties of the error that shows up. Viewing the properties will show you the user that is actually trying to access the file. For Access databases, you want to make sure that you're modifying the permissions of the folder and not the file. You'll need Modify permissions on the folder so that the .ldb file can be created. share|improve this answer answered May 8 '09 at 18:22 great_llama 7,55722328 add a commen

The application connects to data files that are stored as Access .mdb files. Every few days or so (or sometimes multiple times in a day), the site goes "down" in the sense that all pages that try to connect to the database return a “Microsoft JET Database Engine error database engine error '80004005' unspecified error” (the scripts break at the line of code that tries to open a connection to the .mdb file). Pages that do not need to connect to the database continue to work fine. I can clear the problem by restarting IIS on the server. Then things will run normally for a while, but sooner or later the problem happens again. The server event logs do not show anything unusual. The problem seems to happen more frequently at times the website is getting a lot of use though the times it breaks do not seem to necessarily be times of peak use, so it is hard to say. Any ideas as to what might be causing this or how I might investigate it? Thanks! When you're working with ASP or ASP.NET applications and a Microsoft Access database, you're likely to run into an error like this: Microsoft JET Database Engine error '80004005' The Microsoft Jet database engine cannot open the file 'C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\YourSite\Databases\YourDatabase.mdb'. It is already opened exclusively by another user, or you need permission to view its data. /YourSite/YourDataAccessPage.asp, line 15 Alternatively, you may get this error instead: Microsoft JET Database Engine error '80004005' Operation must use an updateable query. /YourSite/YourDataAccessPage.asp, line 15 Both errors basically mean the same: the account that your Web server is running under does not have the necessary permissions to read from or write to the database. This article will explain the steps you need to perform to fix this problem. First I will explain how you can find out the current account that the Web server is using to connect to the database. In the second part of the article I'll explain how to change the security settings so the Web server can successfully access the database. Prerequisites This article will explain the steps you need to perform on Windows XP Professional. This OS comes with IIS 5.1. as the Web server. For other versions of Windows, like Windows 2000 or Windows Server 2003, the steps will roughly be the same, although the screens may look a little different and t
