Pages (ASP) for small-scale applications, but Microsoft Access databases are not designed for scalability, therefore Access databases should only be used where performance is not a factor, and it is best not to host large-scale data-driven https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/174943 applications with Microsoft Access databases. In IIS 7.0, IIS 7.5, and above, several security changes were made that may affect how classic ASP applications will function. For example, if you were to copy a classic ASP application that uses an Access database that is within the Web site's content area to a server that uses IIS 7.0 or above, you may receive the following error message: Microsoft JET Database Engine error '80004005'Unspecified error./example.asp, http://www.iis.net/learn/application-frameworks/running-classic-asp-applications-on-iis-7-and-iis-8/using-classic-asp-with-microsoft-access-databases-on-iis line 100 This is a generic error triggered by the Access driver that may occur for a variety of reasons, but incorrect permissions is a common cause. More specifically, the ability to work with Microsoft Access databases is implemented through the Microsoft JET Database Engine, which creates various temporary and lock files when it connects to an Access database. The following sections will discuss some of the reasons why this may occur and how to resolve those situations. Working with 64-bit Systems Unfortunately there are no 64-bit ODBC drivers, so on 64-bit systems you will have to run your applications in 32-bit mode. To do so, use the following steps: On the taskbar, click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager. In the Connections pane, click Application Pools. Highlight the application pool for your application, then click Advanced Settings... in the Actions pane. In the Advanced Settings dialog, specify True for Enable 32-Bit Applications. Click OK to close the Advanced Settings dialog. Note: The 64-bit control panel applet for managing ODBC connections will not display 32-bit ODBC drivers. To work around this issue, you need to open the 32-bit ODBC applet. To do so, use the following steps: Click Start and then Run, or open a command prompt. Enter the following command:%windir%\sy

Solved ASP Classic “cannot open the file” Microsoft JET Database Engine error '80004005' Posted on 2015-03-16 MS Access ASP Microsoft IIS Web Server 3 Verified Solutions 37 Comments 955 Views Last Modified: 2015-04-02 We have a Microsoft Windows 2003 server with an ASP Classic application on it. The ASP Classic application links to a Microsoft microsoft jet database Access database (2002-2003 file format) on the same server. Everything works fine. Also, I can open the Microsoft Access database with Access 2010 without problem. We have stood up a new Microsoft Windows 2012 server without IIS for the database and moved the Microsoft Access database to the Microsoft Windows 2012 server. When we change the ASP Classic application connection string to point to the new server, strConn = "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0; Data Source=\\NewServer\db$\ApplicationName\data\AccessDatabase_d.mdb; Persist Security Info=false" I receive the following error: Microsoft JET Database Engine error '80004005' The Microsoft Jet database engine cannot open the file '\\ApplicationName\db$\ApplicationName\data\ AccessDatabase_d.mdb'. It is already opened exclusively by another user, or you need permission to view its data. /ApplicationName/default.asp, line 1333 The database is not open exclusively and permissions levels are set to “modify” down to the database itself. I cannot touch the server myself, but I think the connection problem may have something to do with the “Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0”. Our network and application guys are at a loss. Several E

Depending on the configuration of the web server, it may not be the IUSR account that needs the access. I find it's best to fire up FileMon, filter it to the name of my database (with wildcards), and check out the properties of the error that shows up. Viewing the properties will show you the user that is actually trying to access the file
