I have recently replaced the HD, but now it won't restore. iTunes gives error 1429 after it attempts to do so. Trying to format the drive via Disk Utility merely results in it hanging indefinitely at "Partitioning." What could be causing this? The iPod passes all internal diagnostics, including the hard drive surface scan. The Mac ipod could not sees the iPod, and even (once) mounted the drive on the desktop. Something else I've noticed that may or may not be related: When the iPod is plugged in (via FireWire), my Mac tends to hang. Operations such as restarting or closing iTunes will take a very long time. This was true even before it died and on a different Mac. If that does not help at all, try to reformat the drive with NTFS file system (Windows) and then switch it back to your OS.
