Ubuntu as I wanted to install the latest version of it. The way I removed Ubuntu is by simply formatting the partitions (using partition software from Windows Vista). The formatting was successful. When I tried to restart my system I can't able to load windows vista and I'm getting the following screen. GRUB loading stage 1.5 GRUB loading, please wait.. Error 17 Can you guys provide me a way to fix this issue. I dont want to loose any information on my hard disk as I have really important materials in it. Also I don't have my windows vista recovery disk handy with me right now which aggrevates the problem for me. Thanks for the help in advance. DistroUbuntu 16.04 Xenial Xerus Re: Dual Boot : GRUB Error 17 Part of grub is in the MBR where the computer first goes to boot and then it is linked into the partition with the Ubuntu install. When you deleted the Ubuntu install the MBR boot has no place to go. You need to install a windows boot loader into the MBR. Laptop: Sony Viao E Series OS: Dual boot: Backtrack4 + Windows 7 Problem: After re-installing Windows7.When the laptop was rebooted, Grub Error 17 Message appeared. Solution: 1. boot from BackTrack4 Live CD 2. Start BackTrack normal, then oben a shell. 3. type the following command: 4. sudo grub 5. Code: find /boot/grub/stage1 ; based on the output you change the red higlighted below in step # 6 and step # 7 6. Code: root (hd0,0) 7. Code: setup (hd0) 8. Code: exit reboot the laptop and boot normal, (do not foget to remove the Live CD of course ) problem was solved.
