I have an "old" notebook where I've installed Windows XP and then Ubuntu 8.04 - everything worked well for a long time. After the kids played with it (i.e. I have not grub loading please wait error 17 seen what happened), I couldn't boot anymore. Grub simply said Error 17, and nothing else. After several Error 17 failures, the error changed to Error 18 - and this is the error it shows now. What have I tried? I tried several Linux LIVE CD's and DVD's I have: Ubuntu 8.04, Kubuntu 10.04, Ubuntu 10.04, Ubuntu 11.10, Fedora 11, etc. - none of them is able to start, in all modes and options I tried (I have not manually edited the commands, but tried the provided options). I can't use the Live CD OS, and I can't install them either. This is important: it is ok to erase all HD contents! It is ok to format, repartition, lose all HD data - no problem. In most of the Ubuntu flavours, including the 8.04 CD, the initialization stucks, showing repeatedly the following error messages: ata3.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x0 ata3.00: BMDMA stat 0x25 ata3.00: cmd 25/00:08:e5:a5:50/00:00:12:00:00/e0 tag 0 dma 1024 in ata3.00: status: { DRDY ERR } ata3.00: error: { UNC } I also have tried the Windows XP installation CD. The recover command-line fails: fixmbr, fixboot, format - nothing works. If I try diskpart the partitioning tool tells me the HD is "unreachable" and if I try to continue a kind-of

Hello jlbethuram, welcome to the Forums. Grub error 17 occurs when Grub does not recognise the filesystem on the partition it is directed at; e.g. if it's ntfs. Is this the situation: you had vista on a drive and installed openSUSE off of a live DVD onto the drive in a multiboot with vista? Trying to minimize the hassle I thought I’ll take SUSE 9.3, letting her do partitioning to enable dual boot with my win xp. It went wrong. As said I’m new to Linux and any help (in small words) will be appreciated. Details: IBM thinkpad G40 with 40g hard disk and windows xp pro Tried to install suse 9.3 package (downloaded form novell) After installing first CD the troubles started. It should have booted with grub but it didn’t. The only way to continue installation was to boot from the first CD and then using the option boot existing system. I’ve repeated installation, with a newly downloaded CD, but problem persist. It says loading grub 1.5 and then error 17 (cannot mount or something like this) GRUB details: boot loader type GRUB location: 1.IDE 37.2GB, /dev/hda, IC####-0 (MBR) default location:suse linux 9.3 available locations: suse 9.3(default), windows, floppy, failsafe--suse linux 9.3 activate boot loader partition: no replace code is mbr: leave untouched use dedicated boot loader area: yes back up affected disk areas: yes add saved mbr to boot loader menu: no what is wrong? In the mean time, I can only log to the computer using the mention method of using the first CD and using the option of booting existing system. But then I get to see Linux… all files and folders from win xp still exists. Is there a quicker way to log on to the computer? Thanks, djoeha Reply With Quote 08-07-2005,04:27 AM #2 Choozo View Profile View Forum Posts Visit Homepage Registered User Join Date No
