I have an "old" notebook where I've installed Windows XP and then Ubuntu 8.04 - everything worked well for a long time. After the kids played with it (i.e. I have not seen what happened), I couldn't boot anymore. Grub simply said Error 17, and nothing else. After several Error 17 failures, the error changed to Error 18 - and this is http://askubuntu.com/questions/156474/grub-error-17-and-18-grub-rescue-how-to-boot-again the error it shows now. What have I tried? I tried several Linux LIVE CD's and DVD's I have: Ubuntu 8.04, Kubuntu 10.04, Ubuntu 10.04, Ubuntu 11.10, Fedora 11, etc. - none of them is able to start, in all modes and options I tried (I have not manually edited the commands, but tried the provided options). I can't use the Live CD OS, and I can't install them either. This is important: it is ok to erase all HD contents! It is ok to format, repartition, lose all HD data - no problem. In most of the Ubuntu flavours, including the 8.04 CD, the initialization stucks, showing repeatedly the following error messages: ata3.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x0 ata3.00: BMDMA stat 0x25 ata3.00: cmd 25/00:08:e5:a5:50/00:00:12:00:00/e0 tag 0 dma 1024 in ata3.00: status: { DRDY ERR } ata3.00: error: { UNC } I also have tried the Windows XP installation CD. The recover command-line fails: fixmbr, fixboot, format - nothing works. If I try diskpart the partitioning tool tells me the HD is "unreachable" and if I try to continue a kind-of BSOD appears, giving me the only option to restart the computer. If instead of the recover command-line, I try to install the system, the same diskpart thing happens in the partition selection step. So, I downloaded and burned Rescatux into a CD. It can't start, saying: Welcome to GRUB! error: invalid arch independent ELF magic. Entering rescue mode... grub rescue>

Ever since I installed it, every time i boot up my machine (VPR Matrix, P4 2.40 Ghz, 1GB RAM, nvidia 7300GT 512MB)the error GRUB Error 18 shows up. So each time that happens, i cant do anything, so i just did a clean install with windows. All i did with opensuse 11.0 was run the dvd install and everything installed normally. It booted into opensuse 11.0 KDE 4 and everything was great, until i turned my machine off... then the GRUB Error 18. ive tried different things but nothings working and im wasting my time. Desired boot:Windows XP Pro, Ubuntu Studio 8.04, Opensuse 11.0 someone plz help im still kind of new to linux Reply With Quote 03-Jul-2008,01:58 #2 Ecky View Profile View Forum Posts View Blog Entries View Articles Parent Penguin Join Date Jun 2008 Posts 695 Re: Problems with GRUB Error 18 Explanation of grub error 18: http://wiki.linuxquestions.org/wiki/GRUB#Error_18 The generally used fix seems to be creating a small partition at the beginning of your drive and mounting it as /boot It should be possible to have both your ubuntu and suse boot files on the same partition, as long as you edit the grub entries accordingly Something like this should work On /boot make directories for suse and ubuntu (/boot/suse and /boot/ubuntu), each directory would have the files normally found in /boot for that particular distro In your grub entry for suse then you would need to have something like: kernel /boot/suse/vmlinuz [followed by your usual options] initrd /boot/suse/initrd (ubuntu's would be similar to: kernel /boot/ubuntu/vmlinuz [followed by your usual options] initrd /boot/ubuntu/initrd ) There are other scenarios like putting one distro's boot files in a folder in another distro'
