I have an "old" http://askubuntu.com/questions/156474/grub-error-17-and-18-grub-rescue-how-to-boot-again notebook where I've installed Windows XP and then Ubuntu 8.04 - everything worked well for a long time. After the kids played with it (i.e. I have not seen what happened), I couldn't boot anymore. Grub simply said Error 17, and nothing else. After several Error 17 failures, the error changed to Error 18 - and this is the error it shows now. What have I tried? I tried several Linux LIVE CD's and DVD's I have: Ubuntu 8.04, Kubuntu 10.04, Ubuntu 10.04, Ubuntu 11.10, Fedora 11, etc. - none of them is able to start, in all modes and options I tried (I have not manually edited the commands, but tried the provided options). I can't use the Live CD OS, and I can't install them either. This is important: it is ok to erase all HD contents! It is ok to format, repartition, lose all HD data - no problem. In most of the Ubuntu flavours, including the 8.04 CD, the initialization stucks, showing repeatedly the following error messages: ata3.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x0 ata3.00: BMDMA stat 0x25 ata3.00: cmd 2
because of the advertised back-up from Novell. The installation went according to a couple of reports I have read until the first boot from the http://www.tuxradar.com/answers/234 hard disk. I have tried every suggested way to install this system and https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=64107 always end up with the same results, namely Grub loading stage 1.5 Grub loading please wait Error 18 with a flashing cursor That is as far as it goes. What this has effectively done is rendered my computer unusable as I cannot now get into Windows and have had to bring an error 17 old computer back into use for this email.
A Because Grub has to fit in a small space on the disk, there is no room for helpful error messages, but 'Error 18' translates as 'Selected cylinder exceeds maximum supported by BIOS'. In other words, your BIOS - which initialises hardware - is unable to handle a hard drive this large. Windows is able to boot because grub error 17 the Windows partition is at the start of the distro's disk, within the area handled by the BIOS. This is not a limitation of Linux, which hasn't even started to load, but your hardware. You would see the same problem if you tried to install two versions of Windows, say 98 and XP. There are a few ways to deal with this. You could work around the problem by making your Windows partition smaller (it is impossible to say how small without knowing details of your BIOS and hard disk) and telling the SUSE partitioner to create a separate /boot partition. This ensures that the files Grub needs are at the start of the Linux partitions, hopefully within the area handled by the BIOS. Once the bootloader has started, the BIOS limitations are irrelevant. A better option is to check your motherboard manufacturer's website for an update to the BIOS, which could make this problem disappear. A third solution, which isn't ideal but would give instant access to your operating systems, is to boot from the installation CD. The first option on the initial menu is to boot from hard disk, which will take youMember From: Helsinki, Finland Registered: 2008-08-20 Posts: 202 [SOLVED] Grub error 18 - cannot boot to Windows Earlier today I tried to install Arch 64bit (I had 32bit earlier) with kdemod to test new KDE4.2. However, after installation I could not boot neither Arch nor Windows. Grub appeared, but every single option gave me an error. I can't remember anymore which error it was, but It doesn't matter anymore. I thought I had made a really stupid and basic mistake while installing, I just didn't know what.I wanted to test KDE4.2 so much so I installed Kubuntu (yeah, this topic is not related to Arch Linux, I hope that somebody can help me though, move this topic to somewhere else if it doesn't belong here ). Installation was fine, booting to Kubuntu was fine (and upgrading to KDE4.2 was fine), but booting to Windows was not. It gave me a following error:Error 18: Selected cylinder exceeds maximum supported by BIOSI googled a bit and found this: http://wiki.linuxquestions.org/wiki/GRUB#Error_18 I reinstalled Kubuntu using /dev/sdb1 as /boot and /dev/sdb2 as / (/dev/sdb3 is windows and /dev/sdb4 is my game partition, ntfs). Before this I had /dev/sdb1 as / and /dev/sdb2 as swap (now I have no swap at all, my 4GB RAM should be enough). The only difference was that at first grub gave me error 15 (I fixed it with Kubuntu LiveCD). After that - no difference.I need Windows for playing. That's why it's very important that I can use it. [SOLVED] In addition, I should say that /dev/sda is a separated hard drive which is encrypted with Truecrypt. (I said this because I think that Kubuntu tried to install grub on (hd0)...) When I tried to mount this hard drive with Kubuntu, it couldn't do it. I wanted to test mounting on Windows to check if it is just Kubuntu's problem. If not, I'm fucked because this hard drive contains VERY VERY VERY IMPORTANT files. [/SOLVED]I really need help, please. If somebody can help me, (s)he is my hero.
