GRUB stands for GRand Unified Bootloader, which is invoked by your system’s BIOS to load kernels and display a boot menu for users to choose from. It's similar to NTLDR or BOOTMGR for Windows, but support both Windows and Linux kernels, and comes with more features. However, if you haven't configured Grub properly, you will encounter GRUB errors like those described below. Grub Loading Error 15, 17, 21, 22 For Grub Stage 1, th
17 ad.madhavanJanuary 4th, 2009, 03:08 AMI have a Dell Dimension 3100. I used to have Ubuntu 7.10 and Windows XP Dual boot working perfectly. Recently I have been running out of disk space. So I used partition magic and formatted all the partitions reserved for linux, but https://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-1029882.html leaving windows intact. After which, I converted it to NTFS and merged it all into one disk http://www.ehow.com/how_7804216_repair-error-17-grub.html space for windows. When I tried restarting the computer I get this message: GRUB loading Error 17 I have a lot of inportant files on the Harddrive. I do not want to loose them. Please help me restore the system or boot into windows without any file loss. Thanks in advance, this is quite urgent since I have only one computer and life without computers can be error 17 hard.... Adarsh Tim SharittJanuary 4th, 2009, 03:14 AMThe grub files were on the linux disk you deleted. You need boot from your Windows CD and run fixmbr from the recovery console. stderrJanuary 4th, 2009, 03:23 AMAs the above poster says. You only have one Master Boot Record on a hard drive, and it's small - so it usually just links to the rest of the bootloader, located elsewhere. If you installed Windows first, the MBR would have been filled with part of Windows' bootloader. grub loading error Ubuntu's installation would have removed that and filled it with part of the GRUB bootloader. So, currently, a bit of the GRUB loader (basically a link to the rest of the loader - which is now deleted) resides in the MBR, and when you try to boot, the GRUB loader moans that it can't find the rest of GRUB ('cos it's gone :)). fixmbr should replace that GRUB code with Windows' own once more. x22January 4th, 2009, 03:25 AM"fdisk /mbr" rewrites the original master boot record: here's a link to more info http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview/id/215902.html ad.madhavanJanuary 6th, 2009, 11:45 PMThank you very much for the answers, it is very hard to find the XP CD since Dell does not provide it with the computer anymore. I will try your suggestion when I acquire a XP Cd and hopefully it works. caljohnsmithJanuary 7th, 2009, 12:13 AMThank you very much for the answers, it is very hard to find the XP CD since Dell does not provide it with the computer anymore. I will try your suggestion when I acquire a XP Cd and hopefully it works. If you want, you could install a Windows equivalent MBR from your Live CD so that you don't have to hunt down a Windows CD to use. You can do that by running the following commands in a terminal (Applications > Accessories > Terminal): sudo apt-get install lilo sudo lilo -M /dev/sda mbr And assuming the Windows partition still has the boot flag set on it, you shou

Grub, which stands for Grand Unified Bootloader, is software that allows a computer to install multiple operating systems onto a single computer. Grub is distributed with a number of operating systems, including Ubuntu Linux. If a computer reports Grub error 17, it will not be able to load the installed operating systems until the error is corrected. Resolve the error by configuring the system's BIOS to be more flexible with drive recognition or by configuring Grub to recognize the correct device order. Boot the computer, then enter the command to enter BIOS displayed at startup. The command to enter BIOS will be displayed on the initial splash screen and must be entered before the splash screen goes away. The BIOS command varies depending on manufacturer. For instance, Compaq computers use "DEL" while most Dell computers use "F2." Locate the HDD devices in the BIOS menu. All HDD devices connected to the computer should be detected by the system BIOS. If a drive is missing from this list, check that the device is properly connected. A correctly connected drive that is undetected could indicate a physical problem with the disk that may be unrecoverable. Write down the initial BIOS settings for each HDD device on the system. Before making changes to a system's BIOS, it is good practice to record the initial settings so that they can be returned to their prior state if necessary. Change the mode on all HDD devices to "Auto" by cycling through the available options using the + or - keys. Change the Type field of the HDD device to "User" by first highlighting the field by tabbing over to it using the up and down arrow keys, and then cycling through the available options using the + or - keys.
