If you uninstall all the stuff from the Control Panel, unplug it then run Driver Cleaner and reinstall. Should help. Plugged the USB receiver, tried to install the driver and got the same message atirw.dll failed to register, and after that x10something.dll failed to register. I the only option left, a complete Windows reinstall? It all depends. Reinstalling Windows would give you a boost if you haven't reinstalled in the last 6 months - 1 year. H3X4D3C1M4L, Aug 15, 2005 #5 Tipstaff Well
in to Go to QuickBooks.com QuickBooks Learn & Support Home QuickBooks Help Last modified QuickBooks, United States 1 person found this useful Error 1904: [2] failed to register, when installing QuickBooks Desktop When you install QuickBooks Desktop, https://community.intuit.com/articles/1021279-error-1904-2-failed-to-register-when-installing-quickbooks-desktop you receive the message: Error 1904: [file path / name / extension] failed to register Programs that have failed to register include: ICWrapper.dll, QBPrefs.dll, RcnFndRequestHandler.dll, qbupdate.exe. Why this is happening These issues can be caused by an incorrect file setting or a damaged file. If multiple errors are displayed and they specifically mention the ICWrapper.dll, qbprefs.dll, and qbupdate.exe (among others), then the problem is probably caused by a damaged component of Microsoft Visual error 1904 C++. This error can also occur if you are installing QuickBooks after upgrading your operating system (such as from Windows Vista to Windows 7) and your computer was not rebooted after the upgrade. How to fix it Unless you have one of the special cases shown below, you will need to run the QBInstall tool: Click the Ignore button on the error message and allow the installation to complete. Do not open QuickBooks. failed to register Restart your computer. If the installation did not complete, then download and run the QBInstall Tool. After the tool completes and you reboot again, proceed to installing QuickBooks again. If the QBInstall Tool does not work, you can also run the Component Repair Tool. If neither of these resolve the issue, create a new Windows Admin User account and try to install on the new Admin User.  Special Cases IMPORTANT:  If you are installing QuickBooks 2015 Versions and have Bitdefender anti-virus you must add the c:\Program Files\Intuit (c:\Program Files(x86)\intuit on a 64 bit machine) to the exclusion list in Bitdefender. Turning off or disabling Bitdefender will not solve the issue. Click here to see how to add the exclusion If you have Sophos anti-virus: On 9/20/2012, Sophos anti-virus released an update that is known to cause this error in QuickBooks. To resolve this issue if you have Sophos anti-virus installed, the Sophos anti-virus services must be disabled before installing QuickBooks:  Stop the Sophos Anti-Virus services by clicking Start, select Run (or type Run in the search field), and then type services.msc and press Enter. Right-click each Sophos service that is running and select Stop. Install QuickBooks. After installing QuickBooks, locate and delete the quarantine.xml file from: Windows 8/7/Vista: C:\ProgramData\Sophos\Sophos Anti-Virus\Config\Quarantine.xml Run services.msc again and start the Sophos Anti-Virus services.
