Error 5 : Access Denied when starting windows service up vote 39 down vote favorite 5 I'm getting this error when I try to start a windows service I've created in C#: My Code so far: private ServiceHost host = null; public RightAccessHost() { InitializeComponent(); } protected override void OnStart(string[] args) { host = new ServiceHost(typeof(RightAccessWcf)); host.Open(); } protected override void OnStop() { if windows could not start the service on local computer error 5 access is denied (host != null) host.Close(); host = null; } Update #1 I solved the issue above by granting permissions to the account NETWORK SERVICE but now I have an another problem: Update #2 Service cannot be started. am the administrator. Any ideas? HP PC Pentium 4 1.8 Ghz, 384 MB RAM Windows XP Pro Version 2002 SP2 Avast home AV, service failed to start due to the following error: access is denied. ZoneAlarm Pro, SpywareGuard, Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware Thanks, Dan LordDragonDan, Aug 31, 2006 #1 yank101 Private First Class Error 5 is most likely something is not giving you permission ‘no duh’. make sure you are logged on using http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4267051/error-5-access-denied-when-starting-windows-service an account that has permission to view the shares on the remote computer. ie. is log on an admin still there? “meaning your not a guest on your on pc!”. 1. Kill fire wall, ‘try this frist' ! 2 . Change settings in your IE browser to default 'optional' some small simple things to try w/o messing up more stuff, good luck, hope you get better help then me!!!! cheers jeff yank101, Aug 31, 2006 http://forums.majorgeeks.com/index.php?threads/server-service-access-denied.101158/ #2 erikske Sergeant For clarity: which server do you mean? Do you mean the 'Server' service listed in the system services? Normally this service starts automatically and you don't have to start it, unless you or windows decided to turn it off first. The startup type for 'Server' should be set to automatic. As for firewall settings: svchost.exe should always be granted FULL access to everything, else your internet won't work. erikske, Aug 31, 2006 #3 LordDragonDan Private E-2 I can't start the server service. I get "error 5: access denied." Yes the server service. I am the administrator. I've tried turning off all the security. I've also tried everything else I can find. This is the only service I can't start. It is set to automatic but does not start. LordDragonDan, Aug 31, 2006 #4 LordDragonDan Private E-2 Just to clarify I ran this. had the Server service in the stopped state. When I tried to manually start the service I got an Access Denied error. A restart of the server didn't help. The Server service is critical because file sharing http://www.microsoftnow.com/2008/11/server-service-not-starting-denied.html depends on it. If the service is stopped, shared folders and administrative shares on the server cannot be accessed. This is especially critical on file servers, and on domain controllers for replication/access to SYSVOL folder https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/21132844/Can-not-start-the-server-service.html for group policies. The problem got resolved when I installed all the latest updates from Microsoft Update and restarted the machine. This is a security vulnerability listed in the security bulletin MS08-067 released by Microsoft this error 5 Sunday. I've been having this issue for a while now on an SBS2003 server. Windows' firewall had crashed and let malware in, and at the same time the "Access denied" problem appeared on Server service. After removing all the malware manually running updates from Windows Update seems to have cured the problem. To check, go to My Computer click on Tools -> Folder Options. Click the View tab. In XP Pro the very last option in the list (for all of my computers at least) is "Use Simple File Sharing". This may not be your problem, because if it was I would expect your question to be more like "Why can't I share a folder" or "the security tab won't show up in Properties". Still, it could be related and it's worth checking out. 0 LVL 1 Overall: Level 1 Message Expert Comment by:SithLoaded2004-09-15 What service are you trying to start? 0 LVL 2 Overall: Level 2 Message Expert Comment by:jtarkenton2004-09-15 Hello No1pcfxx, Have you run the Network Setup on all of the other computers on your n
