How To Fix Runtime Error 53 File Not Found
error 53 This is starting to bug me, really. I've searched these forums for 3 days, but found no answer, I've googled 'till my eyes bled but still I haven't found a solution... In a project I'm currently working on I need the ability to compress files, so I decided to use BZIP2 compression as I've used it before and it works well, so to save some time I simply copied the code from a runtime error 53 file not found vba previous project; Code: Private Declare Function z2Compress Lib "libbz2.dll" Alias "BZ2_bzBuffToBuffCompress" (Dest As Any, destLen As Long, Source As Any, ByVal sourceLen As Long, ByVal blockSize100k As Long, ByVal Verbosity As Long, ByVal workFactor As Long) As Long Now, this DLL-file, libbz2.dll is compiled using VC++ from the latest BZIP2 source (1.0.4), and works just fine in the other project. However, whenever I attempt to use the "z2Compress" function in this project I get a "Run-time error 53: File not found: libbz2.dll", and this file is located in the same folder as the project files. It works just fine though, if I statically declare the path to the file: Code: Private Declare Function z2Compress Lib "c:\my_project\libbz2.dll" Alias "BZ2_bzBuffToBuffCompress" (Dest As Any, destLen As Long, Source As Any, ByVal sourceLen As Long, ByVal blockSize100k As Long, ByVal Verbosity As Long, ByVal workFactor As Long) As Long Though that is out of the question, once compiled, this project is not not meant to run from a static path, it's supposed to be able to run from where ever. I'm losing my mind over this...any ideas on why it can't find the file? I'd really, REALLY appreciate some help on this. Have checked spelling of file and in the open statement. the file is in the same directory as the program. never had this problem before. error always http://stackoverflow.com/questions/20523375/error-53-file-not-found occurs at Open "113Data.txt" For Input As #1 which is the first thing the program does. I can put a vb2010 program data file name (which is in a different directory) in the above open statement and it will go get it and error 53 load it with no problem. All I have been able to find is that a .dll file is missing or corrupted, but no hint as to which .dll or where it is located or what to do about it. I'm an old rookie. I'm using VB6 because the vb2010 program I wrote for my wife's desktop (XP SP3)won't load on her laptop (XP SP3) because of "no certified jit debugger" although it has the required .NET platform installed. If you could help me on this one error 53 file the VB6 question won't be critical, although I would still like to know about the error 53 problem. Thanks for anything you can share. Maybe a test function to retrieve all the file names from the application directory, then example them as a byte[] to see if there is something hinky going on. Or just rename the file in Windows Explorer so you know its not odd, then try again with the new name. As for the VB2010 version - I'm not much on VB, but perhaps you compiled it as 'debug' and not 'release' so its trying to send to a debugger that doesn't exist. The function is calling the Excel file through the command line like this: Shell "Excel \\server\dir\filename.xls", vbMaximizedFocus The DB opens, the function gets triggered, and I get Run-timer error '53': File not found I know that the Excel file exists, and I am able to open it. I have the security permissions to be able to access folders in the filepath. What I already tried: decompile+compact+recompile the DB, using the instructions here. I am still getting the same error. Can anyone suggest other causes/solutions? minor edit - content remains the same. vba ms-access access-vba share|improve this question edited Dec 11 '13 at 16:05 HansUp 79.1k114371 asked Dec 11 '13 at 15:39 sion_corn 1,69851838 Are you able to access the file \\server\dir\filename.xls from a file explorer window? –Shiva Dec 11 '13 at 15:40 yes, i am able to. –sion_corn Dec 11 '13 at 15:41 add a comment| 2 Answers 2 active oldest votes up vote 1 down vote accepted I can't reproduce the file not found error. I adapted your code as follows, but it opens the workbook file without error. Const cstrFile = "\\HP64\share\Access\temp.xls" If Len(Dir(cstrFile)) = 0 Then MsgBox "File '" & cstrFile & "' not found." Else Shell "Excel " & cstrFile, vbMaximizedFocus End If Alternatively, you could create an Excel application instance and then open the file. However I'm skeptical whether that would avoid the not found error. Dim objExcel As Object 'Excel.Application Set objExcel = CreateObject("Excel.Application") objExcel.Visible = True objExcel.Workbooks.Open cstrFile ' do stuff here objExcel.Quit Set objExcel = Nothing share|improve this answer answered Dec 11 '13 at 16:02 HansUp 79.1k114371 thanks for the solution, +1 –sion_corn Dec 12 '13 at 14:57 add a comment| up vote 1 down vote Refer to the mapped network drive (letter).
