You are going to either laugh or cry it's so simple.I am a Dell technical support phone agent and I have been looking for an answer to this https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/892889 issue for long now.If you are using a dialup connection in Windows 95 or 98. And you receive the error message:"Error 678: The computer you are dialing did not answer,"it may be because the driver are corrupted or not up-to-date. Resolve the error by disabling the error control. The issue can be solved by doing this. Go in Control Panel, double-click the Modems icon, click the Properties button, click on the http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r10269293-Error-678-simple-solutions Connection tab. Then ,click the advanced button, Uncheck the box next to Use error control. Close all windows using the ok buttons. You have successfully disabled the error control. You should be able to connect If you are still having problems, you may need to download a more recent version of your Modem drivers. However, most user who have experienced this problem as far as I know, are using high speed internet connection in Windows XP or 2000.By enabling the external modem in Network Connections in Control Panel, I was able to solve the issue.I tested it by enabling and disabling it many times, always trying to connect after each change.I was able to connect without error using the shortcut on my desktop, only when the external modem was enabled. Everytime I would try to connect with the external modem disabled, I would get the now famous Error 678.If an Internet Explorer Browser is open and the system is not connected to the internet, clicking on something will brings up the dialer. It will display a no dial tone result, but only if the external modem is disabled. If it was enabled, the same dialer window would open and the user could see the successful connection process.Like I did.Go ahead, try it.Gilby_510

I did able to connect last week error 678 dial but for some strange reason I cant connect now. I have bellsouth as my ISP. I hear the modem dialing but after there is silence then it pops up this error 678 saying the remote computer does not respond. I have checked all the settings and the query modem and eveything is says it is working so I even called bellsouth and they seemed to think it is on my end. I even called the number on the phone and is sounds like the remote computer on their end is working. I hope someone will help. Make a note of the relevant details from your existing connection and in Control Panel > Network Connections use the New Network Connection Wizard to set up a new connection - with a different name to your existing one, but with the same details. Do not simply make a copy of the existing DUN (right click > create copy) Alternatively if
