Hello! I try to send message from User mode to Kernel mode error 87 the parameter is incorrect windows server 2008 by using IOCTL. My problem is in my user process when I use DeviceIoControl it always returning 87, invalid parameter. I have copied the IOCTL example from the wddk and compiling it in Visual Studio. Could any body tell me what parameter is wrong? char OutputBuffer[100]; char InputBuffer[100]; hDevice = CreateFile( (LPCTSTR)"\\\\.\\IoctlTest", GENERIC_READ | GENERIC_WRITE, 0, NULL, CREATE_ALWAYS, FILE_ATTRIBUTE_NORMAL, NULL); DeviceIoControl ( hDevice, (DWORD) IOCTL_SIOCTL_METHOD_NEITHER, &InputBuffer, strlen ( InputBuffer )+1, &OutputBuffer, sizeof( OutputBuffer), &bytesReturned, NULL); What can it be? Mattias, I doubt that the error code is coming from the user mode process, DeviceIoControl() won't do any parameter checking in user mode and once the transition is made to kernel mode it will just plug the passed in values to an IRP and send it down to the open device. If you look in the driver where the IRP is handled, SioctlDeviceControl() you will see the following: if (!inBufLength || !outBufLength) { ntStatus = STATUS_INVALID_PARAMETER; goto End; }

The parameter is incorrect while mapping a drive Posted on 2006-01-05 Windows 2000 1 Verified Solution 9 Comments 20,553 Views Last Modified: 2012-08-14 I have a W2K Server running Citrix Metaframe 4.0 - SP4 and most patches. About a week ago we started getting the following error when users scripts run: net error 87 the use j: \\serername\sharename System error 87 has occurred. The parameter is incorrect. When we try to map via Windows we get: "The mapped network drive could not be created because the following error has occurred: Attempt to access invalid address." If I reboot in Safe Mode with Networking I am able to map drives. This is affecting ALL users and is critical. ** Please give me some pointers - I'm fresh out ** I have opened up a MS ticket but they have been of little value. Additionally, MS products are 'dumping' on occasion. 0 Question by:technoscheidt Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Google LVL 15 Best Solution bymcp_jon All of those are shared and with permissions granted ? If i try to mirror the files, i get this error in FreeFileSync:Cannot write file attributes of "\\ictcmsswp14\share1\A001\20141020\041G12A0012014102008271700.ffs_tmp".Error Code 87: The parameter is incorrect. (DeviceIoControl, FSCTL_SET_SPARSE)Disabling fail-safe copy at the options does not make a difference.I was not able to find a option to disable the copy of file attributes, there is also no information about this topic at 'help'. Is this possible?I'm using version 6.11.I was using robocopy before, that was working obviously with those parameters: /COPY:DAT /E /MIRI installed FreeFileSync on Win2k3 - 64bit.If someone has a hint, please let me know.Br,Tom Zenju Site Admin Posts: 3491 Joined: 9 Dec 2007 Quote Post by Zenju • 10 Nov 2014, 18:02 There's something fishy going on: FFS automatically copies sparse files, but only if the target has FILE_SUPPORTS_SPARSE_FILES set. So in your case it seems this flag is set, but it does not support sparse files? Do you know some more details about your target file system? tomtheone Posts: 5 Joined: 10 Nov 2014 Quote Post by tomtheone • 12 Nov 2014, 16:12 Hi Zenju,Thank you for your feedback.I think it's a HP 3PAR SAN with a related Windows Storage Server 2012 NAS Head. I try to organize the details about the target storage and also about the target FileSystem. Keep you updated.Br,Tom tomtheone Posts: 5 Joined: 10 Nov 2014 Quote Post by tomtheone • 17 Nov 2014, 08:31 Hi Zenju,I got a confirmation that my destination is a Windows 2012 Server with NTFS filesystem.Question: If it's not supported, can i disable the use of SPARSE_FILES?Br,Tom Zenju Site Admin Posts: 3491 Joined: 9 Dec 2007 Quote Post by Zenju • 27 Nov
