for and attempt recovery of bad sectors." It hadn't finished by the time I left. When I came in this morning, there was a message box saying that the check had completed successfully, but I haven't been able to find the results (i.e. if there were any corrupt files or other errors). A subsequent run of chkdsk (in the console with no switches) informs me that there are no bad sectors and that the indexes check out and there are no errors. Usually I run chkdsk on the command line and am able to look over the results. When its run on the OS drive, it logs an event in Application section that shows the same result text as the console prints. Are the results of the Disk Error Checking utility logged anywhere so I can review them? CHKDSK must sometimes be run at boot time. When done, its displayed messages disappear. I'll show you scandisk on windows xp where to find those CHKDSK results again. //OK, so CHKDSK ran when my machine rebooted, and chkdsk results windows 7 displayed some stuff. Problem is I have no idea what it displayed, since it then proceeded to reboot the machine when it was done. How do

I get it to stop, pause or otherwise let me see what it did? It's not obvious, I can tell you that. For a recent article on CHKDSK, I carefully timed taking a few screen shots of CHKDSK as it was running http://superuser.com/questions/173887/where-are-the-results-of-the-xp-disk-error-checking-utility-logged in a virtual machine so I could capture the results. Besides not being useful to the average user, it turns out that was overkill. You don't need to go to those lengths to get CHKDSK's output. In fact, you can almost ignore what it displays on boot. You can get the results later, much more easily. CHKDSK on Boot As I mention in What does "chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process" mean?, CHKDSK needs exclusive access to https://askleo.com/how_do_i_see_the_results_of_a_chkdsk_that_ran_on_boot/ the disk it's checking if it's been instructed to attempt fixes or repairs. If that disk is your Windows drive (C:), CHKDSK can't have exclusive access, because Windows is using that drive simply to run your system. The solution is to indicate that CHKDSK should run automatically before Windows runs, the next time you reboot your machine. When you restart, the CHKDSK is performed before Windows is loaded. Prior to Windows 8, the actual CHKDSK information is displayed as it progresses. In Windows 8 and later, the details are hidden behind a progress indicator. CHKDSK runs as it normally does, and when it completes, it reboots the system - which, of course, causes any progress or results that might have been displayed on-screen to disappear. The Event Log On boot up, CHKDSK saves its results to the Event Log. Now, as I've also mentioned before, the event log is a mess. It's full of random and exceptionally geeky entries that barely have meaning to the people that put them there. (Yes, it's that obscure at times.) That's not to say it's a waste, it's not - sometimes that obscure and geeky information can be incredibly valuable, as we're about to see. But most of the time it's so much noise. Using Event Viewer to Find Chkdsk Results After CHKDSK has run and your machine has rebooted, run the event viewer: hold down the Windows key and press "R", and type eventvwr into the resulting Run dialog. Click on OK and Event Viewer will run. This

Started by McLiam , May 13 2013 03:29 PM Please log in to reply 10 replies to this topic #1 McLiam McLiam Members 11 posts OFFLINE Gender:Male Local time:07:52 AM Posted 13 May 2013 - 03:29 windows error checking PM I'm planning to reinstall OS etc. either on current HD or another if that would be better. I set my box to scanning with check disk, and went out. When I returned the computer had rebooted and there was no message. Before I assume that it is safe to reinstall using this HD (about five years old), I'd like to run the data by someone who knows better than I do. Can anyone tell me where to find the results of the scan? Also, let's say the scan reveals no problems at all; anyone think I should replace the disk anyway? in various news groups where the log or logfile is for Windows XP or Windows 2000 for chkdsk (or scandisk, but it is technically chkdsk). They ask this because when you go into "My Computer" (or whatever), select a disk, right click, select "properties", click the "tools" tab, and select "Check Now" for error checking the disk, it usually makes reference to starting the check on the next reboot and looking in the log file for information on how the check did. The problem is that the damned user interface doesn't tell you where to find that log, and searching on the Web, on Microsoft's own site, and in Usenet newsgroups also generally isn't very clear on the topic. To find the results of a previous chkdisk, go into "Start->Control Panel" and doubleclick on "Administrative Tools". Then doubleclick on "Event Viewer", then select "Application". (This much the newsgroups say, but then what?) Now you will see a list of Application events. Look for the most recent "Winlogon" event. You can tell the date and time of the Winlogon event to see if that corresponds with the particular chkdsk you are interested in seeing the results for. Double click on it, and you will see the results of your chkdsk. By the way, don't worry if you see something like: Cleaning up 3 unused index entries from index $SII of file 0x9. Cleaning up 3 unused index entries from index $SDH of file 0x9. Cleaning up 3 unused security descriptors. Unused index entries and security descriptors supposedly accumulate whenever you delete a folder or file that had any custom settings on it and is not a sign of hard disk trouble and is to be expected.
