I had 2 gigs of memory and decided to try upgrading to 4 gigs to see if that would help. All that happened after I installed 4 gigs of memory is that it took a bit longer before I got the "out of memory" error.I did two things which have made the error go away completely (without changing hardware).1) I render sequence changes much more frequently and don't wait until I have a ton of changes to render2) I went into "my computer" and checked my memory settings. I was shocked to see that, by default, Windows set my page file (virtual memory) to roughly 800 meg even though I had 4 gigs of memory. The standard "rule of thumb" is to have your virtual memory set to twice your physical memory. I went the conservative route and changed my virtual memory to 4096 meg.Once I made the above changes, over 8 months ago, I have not had the dreaded "out of memory" error once. Before making those changes I would get the "out of memory" error every single time I was working with a project in Premiere Pro. Pat M Sherman said:
"unknown error" when compiling a project. You know, this ugly thing: The best way I've found to locate the offending clip when you're dealing with a particularly complex project is to attempt to export it as an AVI file. Once you've done that, it will either resolve the problem (and you can encode the exported uncompressed AVI as needed in handbrake or something else), or, it will quit prematurely without an error. However, the length of the AVI file will give you a very good idea of where the offending clip is. So for example, I had a complex project that was about 6 minutes 34 seconds in length. I was having a hard time finding the clip causing me grief so I exported it as an AVI file. When I did, it stopped well before finishing but didn't throw any errors. I opened the AVI file and it was 40 seconds long, roughly, though it was corrupt and wouldn't really play aside from the audio. Low and behold, it was a warp stabilized clip at 39ish seconds that was causing me trouble. Hope this helps you if you're currently pulling your hair out as I have many times. Nathan W.
