Solved Cannot Add User in Active Directory Posted on 2012-05-14 Windows Server 2003 Active Directory 2 Verified Solutions 12 Comments 1,877 Views Last Modified: 2012-05-15 I do not know very much regarding networks and servers and have come across an error message that I cannot resolve. When I try to add a new user in Active Directory, I get an error message that tells me : "Windows cannot verify that the user name is unique because the following error occurred while contacting global catalog: the server is not operational." Can anyone point me in the right direction as to what could be causing this to happen? 0 Question by:abbieny Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Google LVL 10 Best Solution byPrashant Girennavar First make sure non of the Old reference of Demoted DC exists in your AD. is unique because the following error occured while contacting the global catalog" Following is the few ideas for the below:- 1) Make sure the time and https://kuntalpatel.wordpress.com/windows-serevr-2003-replication-problem/ time zone are set correctly and are in sync with each other on the two DCs. 2) Go in to AD Sites and services and make sure there is a http://superuser.com/questions/1035951/samba-4-the-server-is-not-operational-error-message functional replication path established between the two DCs if they are in different sites. You probably want to make both DCs global catalog servers, but I don't recommend that you make error contacting any change like that at this time as it might make your problem harder to figure out. 3) Run a netdiag /fix and a dcdiag /fix on both servers (if these are not already on your servers then you can install them from the \tools folder on the CD.) If a second pass of a /fix is not reasonably clean, then error contacting global something is wrong in the AD configuration, and the log from these also will help figure out your problem. Hope this is very useful for you. Regards, Kuntal. Rate this:Like this:Like Loading... I'm using the Internal DNS Server offered by the Samba 4 package. I can connect to see shared folders, and access most features in the Windows RSAT, as described. However, a lot of features are missing that should be there. I am also getting a very annoying message a lot of the time, simply stating The server is not operational. This is happening when I use ANY of the Active Directory admin tools from my Windows PC. I tried troubleshooting steps along the way. I know DNS works on the server. I know kerberos works. I can connect with smbclient on my Linux Server. What is happening? How can I fix it? windows samba active-directory share|improve this question asked Feb 5 at 7:22 Canadian Luke 15.6k2374124 add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 2 down vote accepted The fix had to do with DNS. An article about Microsoft Exchange having the same error message by Microsoft tipped me off. The computer I was using to administer the Active Directory was one that I move between many sites. It was not set to use the new Samba server as a DNS server. After I went into my Adapter's Properties, I could set the DNS server to JUST be the Linux box. Once I OK'd out, all the Active Directory Remote Administration Tools connected perfectly fine! (This also fixes issues with permissions, and annoying issues with Active Directory Users and Computers when viewing certain Properties pages - IE on the User Accounts tab, "the pre windows 2000 logon name cannot be displayed" and "You cannot modify domain or trust information because a PDC emulator cannot be contacted", along with other fun messages that don't describe the issue.) share|improve this answer answered Feb 5 at 7:22 Canadian Luke 15.6k2374124 add a comment| Your Ans
