I'm running Sql Server 2008 SP1, Windows 2008 Standard 64 bit. It's a .Net 4.0 web application. It happens when a request is made the server. It's intermittent. It happens every couple times. Or the SQL Server service instance was restarted. –devstuff Jul 19 '10 at 4:25 @devstuff that's good to know. I cant' remember if it was an older database or not. –Chuck Conway Dec 5 '10 at 19:30 1 I can be cause by a pending action on your db. this result in a DB lock. –pix Dec 8 '14 at 19:11 1 The marked answer isn't an answer. The answer by Michael Olivero below that actually provides content and following it solved the problem when I ran into it. (Manually closing the temporary web server on my dev machine.) I recommend the answer be changed. –Adam Miller Jan 7 '15 at 20:26 | show 1 more comment 22 Answers 22 active oldest votes up vote 104 down vote accepted I never found the answer. It was random. Once I rebooted the machine it went away and I haven't see the issue again. share|improve this answer answered Jul 19 '10 at 3:42 Chuck Conway 12.1k93985 1 I had the same issue as @Simon, using the dev web server that devenv fires up. Could read, but not delete. Anyway, restarting the server fixed it. Have only had the problem once in several months.

Every one that I've copied and run, so far, is generating the following error:A transport-level error has error has occurred when receiving results from the server. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - The semaphore timeout period has expired.) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 121)This error occurs in just trying to get the SQL Job started - it doesn't even make it to step 1.I've looked this error up and see that there's a lot of potential causes for it, so yet, I get that it won't be easy to get resolved, but I've got to error has occurred start somewhere. If I have a window that is connected to multiple servers, then open a new window, there is no way to get that window to connect. I have to close the window as both the "Connect" and "Change Connection" buttons are inactive. –John DaCosta Jun 25 '11 at 6:19 add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 3 down vote accepted In 2005 at least, hit F5 to re-run your query. SSMS will determine it is no longer connected and then prompt you to reconnect. If I recall correctly, 2005 will put you back into
