I have exceptions in the firewall for remote desktop and yet it will not work. Does someone know why? Is there something I need to do in local security to get this enabled? so that it remote desktop connection an authentication error has occurred the encryption type stymies me for a few minutes the next an internal error has occurred remote desktop time I run into it. Hopefully after writing this post I’ll remember nexttime. an internal error has occurred remote desktop windows 7 The Error Remote Desktop Connection: An authentication error has occurred. The Local Security Authority cannot be contacted Remote Computer: hostname or https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/office/en-US/954975f2-743c-413f-8cc3-037bf3e35b09/remote-desktop-the-local-security-authority-cannot-be-contacted?forum=w7itpronetworking ip The Reason There are myriad reasons why this could crop up. However, for me it has always beenone: User must change password on nextlogon Under many situations (such as when the local computer isn’t a member of the remote computer’s domain) https://blog.mnewton.com/articles/Solution-RDP-The-Local-Security-Authority-cannot-be-contacted/ the Remote Desktop Connection application can’t handle the prompt to change a user’s password when Network Level Authentication isenabled. One step forward, two stepsback With previous versions of the RDP protocol, a user was allowed to change their password graphically after signing on. However, NLA has no such provision, at least the way it’s implemented in RDC. So, if you have to change your password you are SOL unless you can get to aconsole. Workaround In my case, I was able to sign on to a domain member’s console using the VMware vSphere Virtual Machine Console. When I did that, I got a friendly password changescreen: After setting a new password, subsequent Remote Desktop logons workfine. Enable JavaScript to view the comments Matthew Sojourner NewtonRSS

Everything went well from Terminal server configuration to Licensing. However when error has occurred the users started to login they got a strange error "An authentication error has occurred”"The local security authority cannot be contacted" Remote desktop Authentication error We were troubleshooting the error and realised that if we clear " Reset pwd at Next login" from users property in Active Directory Users and computers, basically to not force them to reset the password then they are able to login just fine. So we did implement that as a temporary solution but for sure kept looking for the real reason. After some research I figured that Windows 2012 has another level of protection enabled by default when we enable remote desktop, which is Network Level Authentication (NLA).
