Note This limitation includes the three characters that represent the drive, the characters in folder names, the backslash character between folders, and the characters in the file name. Workaround Make sure that the path of the file contains no more than the maximum number of characters. To do this, use one of the following methods. * Rename the file so that it has a shorter name. * Rename one or more folders that contain the file so that they have shorter names. * Move the file to a folder that has a shorter path name. 2016 by Nelson I just helped someone that was having this problem in Excel when opening multiple spreadsheets from the network. this is the error she https://ittutorials.net/microsoft/office-2010/a-dde-error-has-occurred-and-a-description-of-the-error-cannot-be-displayed-excel/ was getting: the problem is that she had created some shortcuts to the network drives, and thus increasing the length of the path to such files. according to Microsoft only 218 characters are allowed http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21398980 on file path lengths ( that includes that path and the file name, this seems primitive to me ) and that's why such error is displayed. the solution is to use a network drive error has ( if you have the permissions to create one ) to shorten the path to the files so the file path length is shorter than the 218 characters Microsoft allows. I hope that help someone. Related This tutorial was posted in Office 2010.
